Which media player do I need?

But he would then need to buy another box to play most of his files!

But it doesn't play avi files.

EDIT - Lou beat me to it.

And it was you that mentioned purchasing movies on iTunes.

Apple TV is one of those things you don't recommend to people unless it's a woman asking.

It's the only Apple product I have bought and regretted it. I sold mine on a few weeks after buying. I love their phones and tablets so anti-fanboyism has nothing to do with it. Apple TV is just a waste of time.

Well at least you actually played around with one rather than just dismissing it

Re: Which media player do I need?

I've spent about 2 hours today removing and then adding my TV shared folder as it was only showing 31 of the 46 show folders in the media library.

Just realised you can only see folders with episodes in, which is actually a very useful feature.

The avis look a lot better on this than the Xbox too

I love my iPod, my iPhone was fine. Their computer are overpriced IMO but I see why some people need them or just find them desirable .ATV is a load of balls, it's passable when jailbroken, but it's far too limited as a local player to be considered good.

If you limit your ideas of a streamer to something that plays restrictive content off the internet than fine but
only an apple fanboy would think it was a good streamer compared to all the other devices that play all the formats that apple doesn't, do it in real HD and don't restrict you to using iTunes.

Are you such a fanboy you can't see past an overly restrictive player that doesn't do what many would actually need a media streamer to do and locks you in to either purchasing from iTunes or converting everything you own to an inferior format?

Nope, not at all
Have an iPhone and an ipad, wife has an ipad too and we have couple of iPods too

Very much a fan, but for now a raspberry pi for about Ł40 can do much much much more than the Apple TV can for me. Lovefilm and Netflix don't interest me and nor do the apple rentals

I have no interest in watching a sub hd product pretending to be hd, I'd rather buy or borrow the blu ray and as for streaming etc, well the pi with xbmc meets my needs by playing the files I have stored on my network.

If I could get an Apple TV with xbmc for good price I'd have one

Which media player do I need?

AppleTV wouldn't play a thing I have, which is mkvs and Blu-Ray rips.

I have a Hi-Media streamer and it plays everything you can think of. It was a little fiddly to get working but does virtually everything I need.

The only thing it doesn't have that I'd like is a frame advance function. Do any of the streamers have this? My PS3 used to do it when I used that.

Re: Which media player do I need?

Calm the **** down RichB, you're gonna blow a gasket.

You might as well be shouting MOTORBIKES ARE BETTER THAN VANS at someone moving house.

It's all about the right gear for the right job and in this case ATV doesn't cut the mustard.

Apple make great products, but in this instance it's not the right fit for the guy's purpose.

The thread title isn't 'which media player do YOU need'

Not sure if RichB is trolling or serious.

Apple TV is terrible in my opinion.

I tried out some Blu rips (7gb+) and DVD ISOs, and they both played flawlessly. DTS / DD etc all work great.

The Netflix app is better than the Xbox one too.

Loving the Android remote control - fantastic for searching and the keyboard.

Highly impressed so far, and looking forward to having a proper play this weekend.

Apple TV is ok if you are using "send to and/or mirroring" via an iPad?

Surely then as I have Plex set up and the iPad app then I could send it to apple TV? so it would play all the file formats that the plex app does?

Yes. Although I will have less than no need for it.

I haven't checked it works, but it's there. I'll click on it tonight and get back to you.

I can click on it and get this far, so I presume it'll work.

Re: Which media player do I need?...Went with WD Live TV

Can anyone who has Been WD TV Live let me know if what your settings are for auto scan schedule (for media library).

At the moment it's set for During Standby only, but I seem to have to do it manually the whole time.

I missed your earlier post about MLB.tv. Thanks for the pic.
I went with a PS3 Slim in the end.
