Re: Which media player do I need?

Where has this gadget been all my life? So far it's love at first sight. Appears to do everything I need it to. The picture seems sharper on this than on my Xbox via Windows Media Centre.

How's the media scraping on the newer models now?

Mine was first gen and didn't do any of that, I had to use an external scraper and it was a huge amount of time to do my library.

Glad you're liking it. As I said it changed the way I watched TV and movies.

Not got that far with playing so far, but I don't keep my TV after watching it.

Found a possible issue... Doesn't seem to work with Unblock US. Not the end of the world, I can use my Xbox for international Netflix and this for UK.

Having used quite a few of these I have finally settled on a Mede8er MED600X3D - it does everything quite brilliantly and unlike most of these devices it:

Has all the functions/buttons of a Bluray player - zoom/custom zoom, slow motion, jump forward, chapter select, FF without skipping/jumping. The remote is also excellent and is backlit.

You can set it up to boot straight into your jukebox with synopsis and box covers and even have this happen from more than one source.

Picture quality is top notch as is the audio support and subtitle options.

It is also continuing to evolve and a built in movie scraper is in the works - basically it does everything I need just flawlessly.

Of course it is quite expensive at approx Ł115 but I think it has easily been my best purchase in the last year and certainly wouldn't be without it now.

Re: Which media player do I need?

Doesn't Apple do next to nothing out of the box and needs jailbreaking?

Yup.

Natively. No support for popular formats, MKV for example. If you have a jailbroken ATV2 it's 720p only.

If you buy into the apple ecosystem then fine but other than that it's pretty poor until as beebul noted the ATV3 is jailbroken.

Re: Which media player do I need?

I managed to cripple it by adding 15k songs and 12k photos to the media library at the same time. Sorted it now.

I'm going to leave the songs and photos off it for now!

The scraping is pretty good on this. TV scraping I find is generally flawless, while movies you may sometimes have to go in and do it manually from time to time. For some reason the movie scraping changed recently. Beforehand you would name your films something like:

Psycho.1960.mkv
Psycho.1998.mkv

And it would correctly identify the film using the combo of name and year of release.

Recently though having the year of release in the filename for any newly added films just breaks the scraper, which in turn means it can't identify the right version of a film sometimes. Dunno why it changed and I'm pretty sure there wasn't an update that would make the change. I guess it must be related to movie database it uses and something changed that end.

Put a non jailbroken Apple TV up against a device running XBMC and see the difference

I would love an Apple TV with XBMC on it but prices seem mad as the latest one has yet to be broken

Not at all
Those who have ripped there blu rays, hd DVDs, DVDs etc to external storage ( something I've been spending time doing of late to free space ) its great
Rip to external storage, build library, sit and browse very simply
The xbmc ipad app is great, browse media on ipad and play on tv

I used to rip dvds all the time, been though many media players like the original freecom one back in the day and then one you could just hook an external drive to and watch your stuff that way

I much prefer apple tv

With streaming services like netflix and being able to instantly rent (or buy) and watch *new* movies aren't we a little bit past having to use software to copy our stuff to an external device?
I bloody hope so

Maybe, but if I have paid all this money for the stuff then anything that allows me to watch it without paying again is a bonus
Also with those of us restricted with low broadband speeds its a good option as quality on Netflix etc is awful

Why would anyone want to purchase iTunes movies?
HD movies in low bitrate video with DRM in the lowest surround sound format.

Same with Netflix and other streaming services. If you really want to watch and hear HD at the moment, it's bluray.

Nobody mentioned avi files. Apple TV doesn't even play MKV's.

I think the apple TV has a place, it's just not a superior product unless you're happy compromising and have a house full of other overpriced shiny apple gear.

You're goddamn right I do!

Who mentioned anything about hd exclusive stuff?

Russ has bought a wd media player to play stuff (including avis!) he has downloaded, i simply suggested (knowing he has a fast net connection and watches netflix on his xbox) that apple tv will allow him to access loads of content via streaming
