4 episodes a season is a bit lazy. Found the Mary character so wet and vacuous. Lacked depth overall, and last episode flew by with a few decent bits now and again. Needs more airtime and better developed scripts if series 4 happens?

While I'd prefer the six episodes we got in the first series (iirc), I definitely would not have wanted it stretched out over 22 episodes, US-style. Give me quality over quantity any day and, for me, this series (which is probably going to be the last) delivered that in spades.

Perfect ending too.

I can't think of anything worse.

Absolutely loved the series, quality over quantity every time for me.

Enjoyed the series although the last episode didn't make much sense (why on earth would they arrest Luther? )

It's still enjoyable enough, but I think each series has got progressively worse. There wasn't enough Alice in the second series and there was even less of her in this one.

If they just left the show there it would probably be for the best. The final shot would be a nice way to leave it.

That would probably be more of a departure for the BBC in many respects, as female anti-heroes are thin on the ground.

I finished this last night - I enjoyed it, but the writing is very lazy. I do like the bombastic situations that occur and it's entertaining and easy to watch, but it's far too contrived. If Idris Elba wasn't so charismatic, I doubt I would watch it. The Alice character's reappearance was good though, she's fun.

So, having finally caught up with this (BBC America only just showed it recently over here) I thoroughly enjoyed it but…

The first part of Season 4 was on tonight.

Just about to watch it as i had to TiVo it.

It's just a two part special with part two on next tuesday.

Also there is a BBC video on YouTube with a season 1-3 recap...

Cheers.

Was a pretty good episode last night.

Lots going on and pretty gruesome in parts as usual.

I see BBC America are showing both parts tomorrow night over the pond with the UK having to hang on till next week for the concluding part.

I enjoyed it but only a 2 parter? Why so short?

Good episode though.

Agree. This ridiculously lightweight mini-series has tarnished the good name of Luther.

It had a weird mixture of tonality and a less than memorable antagonist. It didn't help that I was constantly waiting to hear that female detective shout "You know nothing, John Luther!" but even putting that to one side, the only good bits I can recall were the fridge scene and the opening "who are you?" scene in the first episode, which was properly chilling.

Agree. We were bored to tears. When you see some of the quality shows that the US produce, a two parter, and a poor one at that is disapointing.

I gave up before the 2nd part of the recent series
Something I could not quite put finger on, but I never really felt like I was enjoying it, have to think if was anyone but Elba as Luther it would not be regarded half as well as it is

we found it a tad confusing. the previous series/seasons were a little more straightforward detective cases, whereas in this one there were more characters to connect up and remember how they were related.

some plot holes:
the police turn up at the baddy house with blues & twos, alerting the suspect. not only that but they then stand around waiting for bomb squad. once luther goes in, psycho stalker guy escapes behind the fridge and through the vents. how did he pull the grille back on - and the heavy fridge - after he climbed into the vent (also the grille at the other end was fixed on). why would he not booby-trap his own house? with all the computer stuff in there I would have thought that is the most likely place he'd want to blow up.

was alice actually dead? we didn't see it was definitely her but everyone at Luther HQ was assuming it was her. I don't recall them referring to an actual positive ID.

we've saved it to watch it again but it is a bit of a tarnish to the good name of previous efforts. messy/lazy storytelling. one thing I did like was how good Darren boyd is as a straight actor. I've always found him decent in comic scenes (with coogan, also in dirk gently) and thought he was under-used here, apart from the fridge scene.
