Good solid start. Thoughts?

Man alive that was tense!
I can't remember a better 'home invasion' sequence in a TV series for a long time.

Is this another TV series shot in HD that is not available on Bluray and only DVD (series 1 & 2).

Really enjoyed that. Start and end sequences were superbly creepy, moreso than even most horrors can dream of. Oh, and the blender!

Regarding blu-ray, maybe if this does turn out to be the last series, a complete series blu-ray will be released?

It was great to see it back and menacing and disturbing as ever . Idris continues to excel but I think it's about time he bought a new coat.

I was surprised by
given his actions in previous seasons.

Yeah this didn't ring true at all. I thought it might have been a ruse to get them alone and tell him what was happening, but the ending showed that wasn't the case...unless he's playing some sort of long game. I'll be surprised if that's true. In which case, it was disappointing. Elba's as good as ever, but the writing took a downward turn.

Yeah was going to ask what happened previously, I know it's been a couple of years but for him to suddenly spy seemed odd.

I'm a little conflicted about it. It was wonderfully tense, showing how horror used to be done before things went all torture porn, and Idris is fantastic in the role, but a few things niggled me. Having a base of operations in the basement of a disused restaurant seemed a little out there. Why not just in a different police station?

So the extra case he was assigned was an integrity test, which to me implies that the "unretired" guy trying to bring Luther down already knew who the killer was, except the body hadn't long been discovered so how would he know? If he didn't know why specify get Luther assigned to the case? Why not just get Justin to watch him on the first case if it was just a matter of waiting for Luther to bend the rules?

Finally, we don't know how long has passed since season two, but surely Justin is used to Luther and the way he works now, but he turned against him a little too quickly for me.

Niggles aside, my wife and I were gripped by it and can't want for the next three episodes.

What was the beginning about ?
Guess was designed to feel like " life as normal " but not sure if, as seems the trend these days, there may be webesodes to fill gaps in

I didn't think this was a great opening to be bluntly honest. Nothing wrong with any of the acting but either the direction or editing seemed a bit off in places.

It's good to have Luther back, and perhaps my memory is playing tricks but it was always gritty but keeping things believable and realistic(ish)

We're expected to believe:

Some shadowy part of the MET un-retired a man to investigate Luther?

A new relationship has popped up from a car-crash and some odd phone calls. And the first date is where, the top of a building somewhere?? Who does that?

Justin's nearly instant switch from trusty sidekick to informant/spy.

It had it's moments though. The opening was creepy and especially towards the end when the poor blokes head was bashed into the attic floor until he smashed through the ceiling, clearly still conscious but in a hideous state...erghh.

Oh and I think my PVR missed the very start, as all we saw was Luther walking through the rain and getting in his Volvo?

You missed a minute or so of a load of armed police ready to storm a warehouse and the door opens and Luther and Justin stroll out having collared a couple of bad guys as fire rages on in the background then it blows up as they walk away from it.

Much better episode tonight IMO, still think the Sienna Guillory relationship is weird though....very 'TV showy'

Yep, she doesn't actually seem to have a personality or character at all. She turns up periodically, looks pretty & kisses him. The end.

Good episode, though the bit where he ran out of the care home & climbed on the van to look for the bloke when he clearly had no idea what the guy looked like was ridiculous.

Also, the music is very OTT. There'll be a scene where absolutely nothing is happening & the music will be INCREDIBLY TENSE for no other reason than to amp the scene up a bit.

While I'm here: It's been years since I saw the previous series. Why does the female internal affairs cop hate Luther so much?

IIRC, she was onto him before and Luther (and Ripley, I think) set her up and tarnished her reputation. Can't remember with what though.

As for the episode, nice conclusion to the story. Toothbrush scene and interrogation were the stand-outs.

Hoping that Alice has a decent role to play in the next two though and isn't just a fleeting cameo.

Watched series 1&2 over 2 days to catch up with what happened before watching the start of series 3 and Luther used the computer in Shenks office during a fire alarm (which he set off) to get info when he was being blackmailed and then Ripley saved his skin by deleting the search history when she tried to grass Luther up and the computer was checked, she got a bo**cking and was moved out of the department for making false accusations.

Think he saw him as he entered the care home and held the door open.

Really enjoyed it, loved the tension build up and ultimately Luther saving the girls. Loved him crashing the secret squirrel meeting as well. Wasn't expecting him to be that ballsy
