Well I a fresh install to RC4 and I still can't download the add-ons. I give up. Probably start looking for a closed system at this rate, openelec used to be great.

Edit: Spoke to soon, a reboot sorted it. Phew.
Openelec is still awesome...

I'm interested in trying out sickbeard. One question though, how do you know it will always download the right TV episode and not some junk disguised as the real thing?

I guess there's some rating involved in there somewhere as it seems to know what to do.

Does openelec have all the same features/visuals as XBMC running in Windows?

Yep, it's identical. I've just installed it on my main Revo onto an SD card. That way I can still switch back to windows if I want/ need to. Had a minor issue where it couldn't resolve the name for my NAS so I ended up adding it manually to the hosts file. Took me a while to find what I'd done as my other Revo had no such problems. Turns out either I'd managed to change the netmask when I was entering the manual IP config or it now defaults to /15. Never seen it as a normal number before; used to seeing it in the format 255.255.255.0 which is entered as 24 under OE.

Thanks shteve I'm now torn between a Revo, an Intel NUC or trying to build my own HTPC!

I think the NUC looks a bit more powerful than the Revo but a custom build for under £250 would probably top the lot but then there's more scope for stuff going wrong.

Hmmm, the £249 NUC doesn't include memory or storage so you'll struggle with a £250 budget

How about the Arctic OpenELEC box?

http://openelec.tv/news/21-partners/...elec-installed

199 euros, built in 1TB HD, DVB tuner, DVD drive (assume you could swap out for a blu).

I have both.

Revo is good/great at playback. Small, pretty quiet (mines in a cupboard), but due to its dual core atom doesn't have much umpf.
The NUC is tiny (as in really tiny), near silent and runs idle at 9.2W. As a playback client is probably over powered with a core i3, but it makes a more than capable server for transcoding and other duties (I use it with Plex).

Both have played anything thrown a them.

My NUC came in at £305 inc 8gb ram and a 64gb m-ssd. I'm guessing a revo can be had for half that.

I do like the look of the NUC but edging toward building my own htpc as could build a fairly powerful system for around £240 and then it can be upgraded in the future.

Although its a real effort building from scratch...

Switched my main OpenELEC Revo on last night and there was no sound, just a red speaker icon in the top right. The reason I swapped to OE rather than XBMC over Windows was that it used to lose sound after resuming from sleep (HDMI handshaking issue). No amount of rebooting would make the sound come back; even changing to SP/DIF made no difference. Looked this morning and it appears that that icon means the sound is muted. No idea how that happened as I use the amp for sound, and the mute button mutes that. Anyhoo, if anyone else comes across this problem, pressing + or f10 unmutes it.

Who did you buy your NUC from?

I bought the barebones nuc from morecomputers.co.uk for £215 and the rest from amazon for just under £90 - but I notice that the nuc has gone up to £241 :-(

So is that black one missing just a Hard Drive and memory or do you need anything else to get it up and running?

Also - any idea if this does HD-Audio properly?

I was thinking of getting an external usb blu ray player but looking around it appears that Linux has issues with blu ray for some reason. Has anyone tried it on xbmc? Was thinking it would just be plug and play but that doesn't appear to be the case.

Probably not much help, but I've converted all my BR's to MKV and they work a treat.
I do have an external BR drive at home though so can test tonight if no one responds.

All the icons have vanished in my XBMCBuntu (12.1)! Anyone else had that problem and how do I fix it?!

Does anyone recall the apt-get commands to update it?
