Cool, you'll have to post some pics when you are finished.

I made my first three string guitar at the weekend. It's fretless and acoustic. It's made from an old cigar box and the cheapest crap bit of wood you can get in B&Q. It was just meant as an experiment but it was so simple to make that I'm going to go out and get some hard wood and make some better ones. The box doesn't shut as it doesn't have a little fastener but I'll make something to keep it shut.

I cut the neck about 3 ft long and sanded down the rough edges, and curved off the angles to make it smooth, then stained it with some left over stuff I had in the shed. Pictures...

...and the obligatory crap demo video...

I made a guitar out of a giant Bourbon biscuit tin today...

...and the usual very crap demo, short so as not to bore anyone!

Cheers

Latest effort - Ace of Spades...

This one has an oak neck, smoothed off and rounded underneath, frets marked with pen at 5th, 7th and 12th. Body is a jewelry box which was unfinished wood so I stained it with a couple of coats, two bolts for nut and bridge, piezo pickup and voila another guitar. Got thick guage strings on it tuned to EBE so it has a thick delta blues type tone.

No vid to bore anyone with, the handy Ipad camera to Youtube link has gone with the upgrade to IOS5 booo!

Next effort is going to have frets (famous last words). Don't suppose anyone has fretted a guitar before and has some tips? I've read how to do it and I think I can manage but I bet it's harder than it looks.

I've built a fretted neck which seemed to go well so I'll fix it to the body soon.

In the meantime I built a guitar out of some stuff Jack Daniels keep sending me...

Over the last couple of weeks I built my first fretted guitar, it was a fair bit of work in the end but I'm chuffed at how it turned out. Quite a lot of pictures of building it sorry...

I had to change the headstock idea halfway through and I installed a volume control too. I wouldn't mind tidying up the little rough area around where the neck disappears into the body but other than that it worked out well

Cheers fellas!

I haven't tried to sell any but I might make one specifically to try and sell. That's 9 i've made now, all littering the house. I started two others today, my dad and mother in law have both asked for one.

Awesome thread mate, spent a few hours earlier reading up on cigar box guitars and decided to have a bash at making one, will hit the local tobacco store tomorrow during lunch and see if they have any boxes they will part with for a reasonable fee !

Need some decent hardwood for the neck I reckon, don't suppose the chain stores carry much ?

Where are you getting your piezzo pickups and 1/4" jacks from ? I notice they do them in maplins and from various sellers on ebay, just wondering if any particular ones are better quality.

Planning on keeping my first one nice and simple, 3 string fretless

Nice one dude. Ebay is a nightmare for the cigar boxes as they tend to be pretty small, my wife got me two from ...

http://www.cgarsltd.co.uk/empty-ciga...ky-p-7112.html

And they were both great boxes but it's a lucky dip so you don't know what you are going to get, so probably a good idea to go to the tobacconist. I should really do that.

I get piezo pickups from ebay, I just make sure it's a UK seller and get them for around £3.99, I've only had one break on me and it was my fault. I've heard they aren't the best on the market but they do for me. The sound quality is pretty good.

I also buy tuning pegs from ebay for around £6 which does two guitars, like these ones...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Set-6-Chro...item2a21bd4f8f

They are easy to mount, just drill a hole through and mount with tiny screws.

I also buy hollow metal dowels from ebay for the bit where the strings feed into from this guy...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-16-x-1-S...item4abd6a21cc

They do 3 guitars and are cheap, they are perfect! There are loads of other ways to do it but this is the cheapest and most sturdy I reckon.

The biggest pain I had was sourcing hard wood. If I wanted a tonne of it I could easily get it from a local supplier but I had trouble just getting a few bits. They need to be about a metre in length and at least 2" wide and 1" deep. I was lucky and found this guy doing some...

http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/stretch100...84.m1497.l2754

He said to give him a shout anytime and he has loads of stuff to choose from, just let him know what you need. I got 13 lengths of oak which was nicely finished on 3 sides and it cost £35 inc delivery, which only works out about £2.69 a length so can't complain about that.

It's all trial and error, I'm just making it up as I go. Good luck with it.

I just finished two guitars, the first is an acoustic 3 string for Christmas for my mother in law who loves Rich Tea biscuits...

...and the other is an electric 3 string cigar box guitar for my dad for his Christmas...

Both worked out really well. They both asked me to make them one honest!

Cheers for the info before Clarkyboy, managed to get most stuff sorted from ebay pretty cheaply (machineheads, piezzo transducers, 1/4" jacks, various bolts), got some nice cigar boxes through from http://www.cgarsltd.co.uk/empty-ciga...ky-p-7112.html delivered the next day, £20 for 3 which seems fair enough, I put in minimum sizes and they sent me a selection. Tried the tobacco shop in town but they only had cardboard ones, only get empty wooden ones once every few weeks. I think the guy was looking to make a nice profit on them as well so they would have been no cheaper.

Just need some strings and decent hardwood for the neck now then I'll get cracking
