England 2018 - The bid

Just watched the presentation to FIFA and have to say - excellent! Lump in the throat good. Great speech from David Cameron, Beckham was impressive, the Man City lad Eddie Afekafe was the true gem. And we brought out the future King too.

Today is going to be a long day.

Beck’s can literally do no wrong – great speech!

The whole presentation was top notch I thought – here’s hoping…..

You'd like to think we'd get it. The Russians are dodgy as hell (we don't really need Panorama to tell us that) and I'm not a big fan of shared bids, especially from supposedly 'big' countries like Spain and Portugal.

The whole selection process is diabolical though - how someone has sat down and decided that the current system is the way to pick a WC host is beyond moronic.

Fingers crossed we get it! Not sure what the corruption is going to do to us though, sounds like we should be stuffing some cash into envelopes somewhere along the way.

The whole process of selecting a country just seems open to corruption in my opinion. I think we're guilty of it as well, we might not be handing over cash but the whole "vote for us and your kids gets Beckhams autograph" is almost as bad.

As usual in such instances, such corruption could be cut back considerably if the process was different. Why not just all the countries interested submit a standardised 200 page bid and a presentation by one representative. No lobbying, no stupid gimmicks, no delivering your bid on the back of an elephant

Common sense says we should get it/deserve it, esp. if the prez was as good as is being reported.

But I'm not convinced about FIFA's 'professionalism' when it comes to the voting so who knows.

The Russians got a much longer introduction and welcome from Sepp than we did!

Denis Law being a prize knob:

Another Manchester United legend Denis Law is not so bothered about England becoming hosts. The Scot says: "I was on holiday when Euro 96 was played in England and my holidays for 2018 have been booked. I'm not interested in whether England get the World Cup finals." (Daily Record)

Who books their holidays 8 years in advance? He just wanted his name back in the news.

Yeah, totally agree with that.
Spain & Portugal (current economic woes aside) shouldn't need a joint bid, and Russia will have the stench of corruption for a long time.
I'd also love England to win the bid to sicken that smug **** Warner.

Apparantly the Spanish/Portugal bid overran by 10 mins and also finished off with a criticism of the 'slandering of FIFA'. Has anyone seen it?

How did Spain/Portugal become the favorite all of a sudden when it was a two horse race between Russia and England ? I remember Blatter saying not too long ago they don't want to give it to a shared bit as long as there were other suitable hosts...

I would have thought that joint bids would only be awarded if there was no serious competition - so have Russia and England really shot themselves in the foot over the last couple of months??

Why have a country like Spain with its superb stadium and infrastructure even gone for a joint bid?? Dare say Portugal could easily manage on their own as well.
