Yeah it does. You could read it interdependently though , you'd be missing some back story but it wouldnt be that important

Just finished Senlin Ascends by Josiah Bancroft and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

It's neither a straight steampunk, fantasy or thriller, but blends elements of all these genres in a new and unusual way. The story it about a couple who go on honeymoon to the Tower of Babel (not the Biblical version). His wife goes missing and Senlin must ascend the various levels of the tower to find out what has happened to her.

For the most part, it's unlike anything that I've read before and it's the first part of a trilogy (2nd part already out).

Just over half way through, and I'm not enjoying it at all!
