Firstly, who buys CDs and DVDs on the high street anymore?

Secondly who even buys CDs and DVDs anymore?

The whole thing seemed doomed from the start, there wasn't even a queue in the run up to Christmas.

Can't believe they ever got themselves into a position to expand, the one in Warrington reopened after failing as a HMV and then a HMV clone, then it became a HMV again.

I spent Ł30 in hmv yesterday.

Admittedly because I had some vouchers and there was a sale on vinyl. But I'll be sad to see it go.

I think there main problem is that they have massive megastores when they only need a quarter of the size.

Store part of the website is currently unavailable.

Real shame there is something to be said about having to get off ones arse and go to the shops and being able to browse physical items.

In my late teens and early Twenties I used to go to the old Flagship store in Oxford Street a lot for big box PC games and later for Vinyl when I had Turntables for mixing.

There is still a market for physical media mainly because a lot of stuff is still not available digitally. But it's becoming smaller and smaller all the time. Rumours are of another Xbox in the pipeline without a Blu Ray drive of any kind which says it all about both Games and Film Media.

There's very little to separate a HMV now to what it was like in the DVD boom era and that's the problem. A lot of high street retailers fail to adapt to change.

They sort of pivoted to sell headphones, but that fell flat once everyone had some.

The store is back but PureHMV isn't. Which is a bugger, seeing as I've got enough points for a Ł10 discount.

Several reports of doom and gloom about the Christmas trading period today. Debenhams, Halfords, B&M, even John Lewis talking about not paying their bonus again.

I'm surprised, I always do my Christmas shopping in Halfords.

I'm not surprised, the general decline of the high street as always, but maybe they should try selling less rubbish (B&M). Do people really want to create their own plasticine turd with realistic sweetcorn pieces to stick in it?

HMV have been saved, well some stores.

I give them 6 months. New owner said they are gonna push vinyl sales as that’s what the customers want!

He bought all the Canadian hmv stores and turned them around. Unlike the last lot of asset stripper's it stands a good chance. And focusing on vinyl is exactly the right thing to do.

Yet I strongly doubt the old owners lost money

The only reason they went under this time was because the owners were charging more for consulting fees than the shops were making. (7 m fees against 5 M profits.)

People will only buy Rumours on vinyl to replace the CD they bought to replace the vinyl once. After that, there needs to be something else on offer.

Despite their current popularity, sales of vinyl LPs last year was only 4.2 million whereas CD sales were 32 million.

Any major retailer that focuses solely on vinyl will die.

There's no profit in CDs. They sell for a couple of quid. Where as they get a nice chunk of profit from an LP.

I guess they'll suck the last few quid out of that industry, send independent record stores to the wall, and then declare bankruptcy again

It certainly does. Apparently they shut down the shops at the beginning of last week, and then cleared all of the remaining stock out. By mid week the Derby branch had nothing but empty shelves in it.
