Best thing about this is the way it looks - I felt that the 2.40:1 AR was a bit of a conceit but it seems to work.

Good to see Pike give ghosts a mention this week - perhaps a nod towards future plot developments?

Lieutenant Klem'u'Tot as the Red Angel?

Sonequa's cry acting was really bad, when Saru was on death bad she really ruined the scene imo

Her acting in general is poor. Playing it far too stilted because she was raised Klingon. Then far too weepy and reverent at the opposite end of the scale. The sooner they fire her into a sun the better.

Bit of a small role for Enterprise No.1. I assume she's going to be in it more?

And I'm glad they switched it around at the end. I thought we were going to lose the wrong character for a minute!

Really enjoyed episode 4, my random thoughts...
  • That was a great mix of crazy and FUN.
  • Tig Notaro steals every scene she's in and I want to see much more of her.
  • Absolutely loved the universal translator going wrong and everyone speaking different languages.
  • The conversation about going back to old fashioned screens for communications felt a bit shoe-horned in, but was still appreciated.
  • Number One was interesting, I'm surprised she appeared so briefly.
  • Love any scene where the characters are all discussing things around a table. Feels very Star Trek.
  • The Saru plot became surprisingly emotional, and I thought the scenes between him and Burnham were very strong.
  • Tilly and Stamets singing Space Oddity was gorgeous and delightful.
  • I don't care about the Spock plot at all now, just do more fun stuff like this.

When Tilly was asked what her favourite song was I wanted to her to start singing "It's a long road...".

"It's Wild Wild West by Will Smith!"
"Oh, never mind then"

I really struggled with the Saru-Burnham bits. I thought her acting was poor and quite boring. I was keen for it to get back to everything else that was going on.

A thing that bugs me is that only 5 actors get named in the title sequene but there are 21 (twenty-one) producers of one flavour or another. With the greater invlovement of the bridge crew it seems unfair that you have to wait part way through the final credits to see them named.

The new episode was bad, I liked the bit where Burnham has to "burnham-splain" to the captain they they will lose the shuttle unless we stop it now because only Burnham can explain these things to the idiot captain I guess the writers love her character but she is every scene almost and she is isn't very good in this, I don't the actress was this bad in the walking dead. Still don't know much about the other crew members on the bridge apart from when pike took the register

Also bringing back
was badly written, its like the writer made it up on the spot, a hour before they turn in their script

They did kind of foreshadow it, so that's a little unfair, but I know what you mean Not sure why they needed to, though. There are enough characters there we know nothing about already.

Another very enjoyable episode.
  • The return of Culber worked for me. I felt that it was done in such a way that aligned with all the foreshadowing and story that had come before, and it just fit nicely. It had some really dramatic turns before it was resolved too. Plus, the chemistry between the actors playing him and Stamets is really good. It's just nice to see them together again.
  • Tilly again gets most of the best moments, she's just a delight to watch. I particularly liked her "type 3 phaser" speech.
  • As much as I enjoy Mirror Georgiou, there was something a bit cartoony about her here which detracted from things. There's a danger of her becoming too pantomime.
  • Pike continues to be awesome. I enjoyed the verbal sparring between him and Leland.
  • I loved the visuals of the Discovery trapped half in/half out of the mycellial network. There was also an explanation finally given for the twisted bodies the crew found on the USS Glenn back in s01e03.
  • Given how little time the Discovery had to survive towards the end, Tilly/Burnham/Stamets sure did take their sweet time talking things through!
  • Not sure why Spock's shuttle had weapons, especially given that it was stolen from a medical facility. That's not typical in Trek history.
  • Section 31 have combadges!

Jesus wept, all the endless scientific nonsense exposition and handwringing whilst they were apparently constantly running out of time, was utterly tedious.

And I thought we had gotten rid of the gay doctor storyline. Ugh. Make it go away.

They need to move the Spock storyline on a lot quicker.

I'm glad the Dr is back, but Section 31 needs to go its losing all its mystery and the Emperor is just to camp for her own good to be really menacing. It makes as much sense as using Khan to design Starships in Star Trek Into Darkness. And yet everyone seems to know about it, yet by DS9 no-one knew it existed

No Tig this week where does she go?

Can we get a petition going to get rid of Burnham, her Burnhamsplaining everything is just wrong. Pike should arrange a little transporter accident

And who would have thought they could have made Spock going mad so bloody boring. No way that a shuttle should be able to outrun Discovery.

no doubt this is the way they are going to kill the spore drive and visits to the mushroom kingdom (also sure there is some lawsuit about plagiarism over the spore drive storyline)

Why does the front bit of the starship spin round when they use the spore drive?
