Same here - nearly £40. To be fair, they did their bit - my book appearing in about 4 tweets a day for about a month, but I never saw any sales. Made me wary of trying any of their other paid services, but like you say, NetGalley worked Ok for you.

You'll be pleased to know, Rob, that I went for Soul Defence in the end! (well, defense, as it's in US English). Currently getting the cover edited by Olivia for updating on Amazon, and we'll see how everything goes with the adverts. If no one buys it, no one will notice me changing everything back again...

At least if it sells a million, I'll know I've written a small part of it!
Be really interesting to see how the Amazon ads go.

It would be interesting to do one month on each title to see which is performing best. If the ads aren't working a few weeks in, I'll suggest that.

err, dunno yet. Everything should be in place after the new cover text is done, so hopefully soon after that. I'll keep you posted

I'm really not sure what works for the wifes book. Whatever we try seems to generate a few sales, even the freebie generated 2 sales after the freebie ended and a few unlimited reads of the others, got a review out of one as well. Didn't realise we'd have to pay for the downloads of the book even though it was free, so we paid about £6 to deliver the book to all the freebie people, meaning we lost a few quid.

The facebook ones seemed to do OK, got about 90/1000 click throughs to amazon, but about 7 buyers. Which I thought was pretty good, I don't click on many facebook ads myself so was surprised it was that high.

It's bizarre how there always seems to be 1 or 2 sales when the free download period ends.

What do you mean "pay for the downloads of the book even though it was free"? Was this some promotion you set up outside of Amazon?

You pay amazon the digital delivery cost of your book to peoples kindles, it's probably about 1p a book out of your cut (not theirs), so if you sell 600 free books, it costs you £6.

If you had a massive bestseller and sold 1,000,000, it'd cost you £10k.

That's a sobering thought

I didn't know that. When I got 800 free downloads last year, I guess it just appeared on the credit card as an Amazon purchase and I assumed it was a CD or something.

Apparently you should put it on the 35% royalty option before u make it free, as that option they pay the fee

Yes - after your warning I went and double-checked and found that out. I'd already made the policy decision to never give Books #2 and #3 away free - I'll only use book #1 and any short stories to try and draw people in, and they will always be in the 35% royalty rate anyway, so I'm covered.

I didn't think you got charged for delivery during free promos? Not something I've come across with my own ones.

//edit Looking at some old payment lists for free promotions, I did get a £0.08 per book charge on the sheet, but the royalty column stays at zero, even after a thousand downloads.

So you got charged £80 for the downloads!
Or when you say the royalty column stays at zero, do you mean that they DIDN'T charge you?

Sorry, being ambiguous I didn't get charged anything.

Being charged delivery for free promos is not something I've heard anyone mention before, otherwise you'd think that the Bookbub users who get tens of thousands of downloads would be complaining about it.

https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G200634500 has some examples of royalty calculations. eg:

D. 70% Royalty Option for Promotional List Price
i. Example:
• U.S. Dollar VAT Inclusive List Price = $5.99.
• U.S. Dollar VAT Inclusive Promotional List Price = $1.99.
• U.S. Delivery Costs = $0.15/MB
• Book's file size is 1 MB
• We aren't matching a free promotion on another sales channel.

• Your Royalty per sale to a customer whose applicable VAT rate is 0%:
0.70 x ($1.99 - $0.00 - $0.15) = $1.29
Royalty Rate x (Promotional List Price – Applicable VAT - Delivery Costs) = Royalty

• Your Royalty per sale to a customer whose applicable VAT rate is 20%:
0.70 x ($1.99 - $0.33 - $0.15) = $1.06
Royalty Rate x (List Price – Applicable VAT - Delivery Costs) = Royalty
Applicable VAT calculation: 20% x $1.66 = $0.33. $1.66 + $0.33 = $1.99.

ii. Example:
• Same as above but we're matching a free promotion on another sales channel.
• Your Royalty is zero.

iii. Example:
• Same as above but book is listed as a Free Book Promotion through KDP Select.
• Your Royalty is zero.

So you should be fine

So for anyone who remembers that far back, and wants to know how my BGS Amazon ads service went...
Answer is - very little happened. Despite making 14 ads for me, the cost per click needed to get enough impressions was so high for my genre it meant that I got little exposure. The company was reluctant to go over $1 a click as the odds of profit were too low.
After about 6 weeks of advertising and a discussion on how things were likely to go, we mutually decided it wasn't going to work and I got a full refund, as that was a stipulation of me signing up in the first place. They'd spent about $6 at that point (plus the people time making the ads) with no sales. Fair play to them, the refund was straight away and no quibbles.

Next thing is, do I change the title back to the original one? To be honest, I prefer the original title and I at least got a handful of sales from it.

Sorry to hear that - I thought that with a bit of orchestrated advertising, you might be able to make some progres. Just shows how hard it is for indie authors.

It's got to be 99% luck, hasn't it? You've got a well-written book with a professional cover, good reviews yet still you can't shift many.

If you prefer the original title, why not go back to it?

Thanks - yep I think it's mostly luck, to be honest. There are millions of books on Amazon, and if you don't write directly to market (which in UF means making a rip-off of Twilight or Charmed), or already have an audience, it's tricky to get any traction.
All I do know is that when I try promotion, I stop writing at all. Think I'll leave trying to sell for a while and just try and enjoy the creation process instead.
