Marvelous Mrs. Maisel [Amazon Prime]

Think it’s been mentioned before briefly in the Netflix thread and in the new shows but thought it deserves its own thread to highlight it.

Highly highly recommend this. 4 episodes in and the acting is great and the dialogue is just fantastic and funny, really well shot too. The title and Amazons awful thumbnail nearly put me off as it makes it look like some twee bit of TV but it’s far from it.

Won the best comedy series and best comedy actress at the Glden Globes too if you weren’t aware.

I watched the pilot when it was released, thought it was great and was waiting and waiting for the full series. It didn't disappoint. Great cast, great script and they have the period solidly set as well. I was pleased it did well at the Golden Globes, particularly as it was in strong categories.
It was Amazon's best ever rated pilot and they commissioned two series immediately off the back of that so there is more to come.

Absolutely loved every bit of it. One of the few shows I was trying to moderate my binging to eke out the show as long as I could. The writing, setting, and leads are all fantastic.

Couldn't moderate my binging. Finished already

Stayed consistently great throughout.

Special mentions to Alex Bornstein and Tony Shalhoub who are absolutely brilliant in their supporting roles.

Sounds interesting. Is it a similar comedy style to any other show/s ? "If you like 'X' you'll like 'Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' " ?

Not sure what to compare it to really. It's set in New York in 1958 and revolves around stand up comedy if that's any help. The characters, acting and writing as mentioned above is all top notch and it got better for me as it went along.

Binged S1 and absolutely love this show! Brilliant characters and the old New York sets are fabulous.

Perfect timing as S2 just dropped on Prime.

Yup, it's one of the best show on TV/Streaming right now but it doesn't feature any super powered characters nor is it part of the Star Wars/Trek franchises so hardly anyone here is ever going to watch it!

Most obviously, Amy Sherman-Palladino's earlier show, Gilmore Girls. Only now none of the main characters are teenagers. And there's swearing (and nudity, though that seems to have been a one-time thing). And it has Tony Shalhoub. (So all-in-all: great!)

And in various ways it reminds me a little of the films Amélie, Down with Love and Catch Me If You Can, though not necessarily because they share the comedy style, more because of the fun they have with romanticized retro settings.

Amy Sherman-Palladino's basically the female Aaron Sorkin, her shows have a rapid-fire cadence and fantastic wit to them that you don't really see elsewhere, but unlike Sorkin you've gotta give half the credit to her partner Daniel who co-writes and produces with her.

I think Ms. Maisel has more in common with Preston Sturges's screwball comedies of the 40s and especially Billy Wilder's comedies of the 50s and 60s than anything modern. This is basically classic screwball with a post-modern touch, pulled off to perfection.

So true. Along with the staging and costumes the comedy has such a retro feel at times, particularly with scenes like the secure room at Bell Labs.
