Smashing Pumpkins - reformed 2018!

No love for the new Pumpkins release? It's a massive return to form. First album I've heard in a while that I wanted to start again as soon as its finished. It probably helps that it's quite short and no too overblown, but there's a noticeable step up in songwriting quality from Oceania, lots of catchy songs and quite a mix of styles.

Probably album of the year for me.

I didn't even know they had a new album, so thanks for the heads up. Gonna give it a bash.

I have heard good things too. I'll seek it out.

This was originally planned as a double album, but Billy sensibly decided to split it into two releases. The next album, Day For Night, is due next year.

I'm not that impressed, not finding it very catchy.

New song from the Pumpkins, with (almost) the original lineup all back in the band. The only one missing is Darcy.
It's okay, but I'm not blown away. I'd maybe call it unambitious. It sounds like it would fit on Zeitgeist.

Not great, to be honest I used to love them when I was younger but they really haven't done anything good since the first Machina album.

Whoever mixed that song has done a crap job as well, Billy's vocals are mixed way too high.

Yep, their music has been mixed that way since Zeitgeist. It's like the vocals don't blend with the music.

Its okay but sounds like something that would have fitted in the last few albums

I am still going to try and get tickets to see them in London in October as I never saw them with anything resembling the original line up.

£106 for gold circle or decent seats down to £55 in the nosebleeds. 🤣

A new song from them today:

While Solara did grow on me, my initial reaction to this one is more positive.

Also, the new album is now announced and up for pre-order:

The Wembley Gig was money well spent, not happy about Golden Circle farce but you cant question the 3 hour set list and impressive theatrical sets and lighting that made the whole event a spectacle to remember. The band were on Top form too, a great night.

Another new song, and the album is due this coming week.

Found it a bit off-putting at the start (was thinking it could almost be a Take That song), but by the end I was enjoying it. Mostly. Showcasing Billy's awful voice so much is really jarring.

As a life long lover of the pumpkins I think I'm out sadly, just can't get into anything new. My favourites are still Machina and anything prior, the new stuff is just too dreary and dull to listen to.

I mostly agree with you. Adore remains my favourite thing they've done, and all of the stuff from Zeitgeist onwards really doesn't have much spark even though they all have things which do manage to capture me. I did really enjoy the American Gothic acoustic EP and both Teargarden and Monuments to an Elegy had some very good individual songs, but as a whole they just fall flat. Oceania was just boring.

I do think you could make a fantastic album by cherry picking the best tracks from their post-breakup projects.

He's written a few great songs since but 1 song out of every 20 or 30 songs isn't enough.
