Recommend me some classics

I've decided that I need to see some classic films and not really sure where to start!

I've put Imitation of Life on my rental list so I'm after similar things really or comedies, thrillers etc

Also I can honestly say that I've never seen a film with Cary Grant etc

So can you tell me your favourites?

Another must see Cary Grant film is North by Northwest which of course leads onto Hitchcock. My absolute favourite Cary Grant film is Bringing Up Baby though.

Moving away from Cary Grant, can I recommend a couple of Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers films - Top Hat & Swing Time are a great place to start. Both are magical, uplifting films

I have a book called 1001 movie you must see before you die. If you want classics you could do worse. It a really good read too. Which is handy

One way to get to know the classics is to work your way through the "They Shoot Pictures, Don't They" list of 100 Greatest Movies. And once you are done with those, move on to their Top 1,000 list.

What they do is take numerous top 10 lists from magazines, critics and film directors, and calculate a single top 1,000 based on those. It may not be for everyone's tastes, but if you are looking for the classics, i.e. films that others think are worth seeing, then you could do worse than visit TSPDT.
