Classics at Your Local Cinema

Didn't want to take the Some Like It Hot thread too much off topic, but it was shown at Cineworld Ashton recently. Cineworld (ex-UGC) do make an effort to show classic movies, unfortunately it's off-peak, that often means mid-week mornings, not easy for many to see. As mentioned on the other thread, picture and sound quality can be poor. I saw some of the Ealing comedies and the picture was too 'tall' when in focus, needing much adjustment in the first few minutes. However, it's a fantastic experience to see them on the big screen. Bradford Museum Of Film, Photography and Television often show classics but they are perhaps getting rarer in arthouse cinemas outside of London.

Anyone else seen anything on the big screen recently? Unless you get emailed with the local listings it's difficult to see when something is on.

I've found one - Cornerhouse Manchester until 13 June 18:25 - Mitchell & Keynon - The Football Films: A programme of early football films from Edwardian filmmakers Mitchell & Kenyon. Footage includes some of the earliest moving images off footie, including clips from Northern teams: Burnley, Bury, Blackburn, United, Everton and Liverpool. harbour lights in southampton is pretty fantastic.
they've been doing 70mm screenings of classics every sunday for a while now...lawrence of arabia, cry freedom, vertigo
they're currently also doing a classic italian season with screenings of the conformist, la dolce vita, nights of cabiria...
lots of good stuff, and they have a biweekly film quiz in the bar which is good fun too.

During May the Edinburgh Filmhouse had a series of Buster Keaton shorts and features. This month they have these on show crime movies; plus four Haskell Wexler films, accompanying a new documentary on the latter by his son.

It depends on the month sometimes they have less sometimes they have more.

Fact in Liverpool are showing Army In The Shadows on the 18th-20th of August which should be good to see as apparently it's a new print which was only released this year so picture quality should be good. I've also seen stuff like Appocalypse Now, Alien, Die Hard in 70mm in that cinema. Apparently Taxi Driver is getting a selected cinemas release from the July 14th, so that's definitely another classic people should keep an eye on.

From the Powell & Pressburger website, The Red Shoes is showing this Saturday (June 24) at the Rex Cinema, Berkhamsted, and again at the Rio Cinema, London, on July 2, and the Little Theatre Cinema in Bath is showing The Edge of The World on the evening of Tuesday, November 7.

Meanwhile tomorrow afternoon and evening at the NMPFT, Bradford, there's King Vidor's The Fountainhead.
