I just came across this page which is useful if you're compiling a Bogart collection. This comment about the Columbia releases (some of which are available relatively cheaply at the moment at play.com) caught my eye:

"All films were transferred in high definition and have a good to very good audio presentation record; and knowing Sony, the transfers were likely done on uncompressed HD-D6 material rather than the (still excellent, compressed by a ratio of 2 ½, yet less costly) variant of Panasonic's D5 system.

"That means that these films are available immediately even when the new standard (whichever it may be) of HD DVD will hit the market."

Shame about The Barefoot Contessa which I had on order, but which I've now cancelled - there are better fish to fry out there...

My favourite is "The Big Sleep".

But I wanted to make mention of "In A Lonely Place". This is a great film, with a great Bogart performance. If you have not seen this you are really missing out.

Fans might be interested in the following R1/R2 comparisons on the dvdbeaver.com website:

In a Lonely Place
Dead Reckoning
The Harder They Fall

The first is particularly annoying for those of us who bought the R2 (although, I must admit, I was perfectly happy with the transfer until I read the Beaver's report!)

I wonder why this keep happening with Columbia titles; the R1 His Girl Friday was also better than the R2.

Gotta be TOSM for me.

Those R2 Bogart boxsets look great, especially the second one. Looking around I just found the first one for £11.50 (rrp 34.99) at DVD Popcorn but can't find the other one below £25 anywhere. Anyone seen it cheaper?

Not Bogie's finest, but nice to see it anyway; Paramount is releasing Michael Curtiz's comedy We're No Angels in R1 come September.
