Geostorm (2017) Gerard Butler

From Dean Devlin, writer and producer of Independence Day, whose jealous of the world ending events from his director friend Roland Emmerich, decides to have a go himself! (me, cynical!?)

Or here's the real plot:

Quote:
After an unprecedented series of natural disasters threatened the planet, the world’s leaders came together to create an intricate network of satellites to control the global climate and keep everyone safe. But now, something has gone wrong—the system built to protect the Earth is attacking it, and it’s a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything...and everyone along with it.

That's mentioned on the Wikipedia page but I haven't seen it elsewhere yet.

This was supposed to be released last year but was delayed for lots of reshoots. I'm sure it's going to be great.

Maybe they decided that the sub-plot was not worth it after the Nov 2016 election.

It's the core 2 but in space!

Looks utterly rubbish and I'm sure I'll watch it.

After a long delay and many re-shoots this seems to be creeping into the cinemas at last. The reviews suggest it will be The Day After Tomorrow meeting Olympus Has Fallen and should be watchable if one keeps common sense out of the way for a couple of hours.

It’s just about the best worst film you’ll ever see. It’s utterly, totally atrocious but in that kind of way that could end up being some kind of cult classic. I won’t rven start on the plot as it totally makes no sense whatsoever..none at all. The pacing is all over the place, thde dialogue is some of the most disgraceful ever committed to celluloid, the science is ridiculous, the FX lamentable and the performances....oh boy, the performances are a new low in cinema history.

We all know that Well’ard Bumbler is bad, straight to video bad. In this film however he takes his acting nadir to its apex (sic). He is so utterly terrible that it becomes almost mesmeric to watch him continue to mumble, growl and chew his way through the script without almost any outward show of emotion.

Guys, it’s bad - it’s probably way worse than you thought it was going to be. It’s the kind of bad that makes Sharknado (and all it’s versions) look good and believable.

Personally, I’m now waiting for someone to splice songs into it because I think for it to attain true cult status, we really need it to become “Geostorm: The Musical”

Chee, it must be terrible then. They'll probably offer a free bowl of popcorn to anyone buying tickets for the film.

Posted this over on another forum last night after catching it:

Yeah it's crap, more an unravelling of a completely nonsensical political conspiracy than actual global disaster action epic, and when the CGI gravy does start to flow it's very generic and very poorly rendered at times (CGI Kremlin probably being a low point, but the Dubai cityscape is just as bad).

The script is terrible, just an endless sequence of hoary old clichés, creaky contrivances, cheesy pontification, soap-opera family melodrama, tedious exposition, robotic dialogue, yikes! Charisma vacuum Jim Sturgess's performance can probably most generously be described as "nervous" and he spends 99% of his screentime with this sweaty, anxious expression that suggests he's either suffering from the early stages of a massive heart attack or he's struggling desperately to pass a particularly stubborn stool (this is before the Geostorm hits! By the time that happens it seems business as usual for the character tbh because he looked just as stressed out when he was about to bonk Abbie Cornish two days before the **** really hit the fan). Oh and Gerard Butler is still doing that weird thing where he slurs every second word because he's only talking out of one side of his mouth.

The only positive thing I can say about it is that is IS very similar in tone and structure to Independence Day so if you're old enough to have caught the mid-90s glut of SFX disaster flicks then you might just get a pang of nostalgia whilst watching this, but for the most part Geostorm just reminds us why that genre had a relatively short lifespan.

I caught the 8.50pm opening night screening in the biggest theatre my local has and it was fairly empty, probably about 20% full. That doesn't bode well for its BO prospects.

Seemed like a Poundland Armageddon.

So many cliches, and lazy writing plotting.

If you couldn't predict who the bad guy was from the credits alone...

Couldn't stop rolling my eyes when

You could almost tick off the bits from other films, the dog in peril, the massive wholesale destruction that you just couldn't care about, the father promising his daughter he'd return,

I like action films, I like films so bad they're entertaining, but this was just...poor

Too many computer screens and not enough climate destruction (from someone who watched ID4 5 times at the cinema). Disappointed.

Caught this tonight - worst film I've seen in ages. The science was so bad that I found it distracting... just terrible.
