Interestingly they completed episode 2 first. I'm assuming they went with the American episode due to it being unfunded by an American company.

What slightly worries me is that nobody looked at episode 2 after the edit and said this is tedious and/or isn't funny. I'm worried May is being turned into a bit of a joke too, normally he'd be more calculating rather than repeating the same thing that kept getting him shot. I hope there's enough people around willing to challenge rather than say everything they do is great.

I'll give it time, but I did expect a much stronger start than this. Maybe having 12 episodes to fill each series is too much, especially when bringing a new crew together (even if a lot of the old Top Gear crew have transferred across.)

I thought Ben Collins was going to be 'Stig' (again!). Wasn't there a short teaser before the showe aired?

EDIT: Just looked it up, and it seems not. It was a clip from one of their live shows.

Whilst it has a large budget I am sure, it's not got an endless budget just to reshoot an entire episode that isn't funny.

I actually didn't think the 2nd episode was too bad, yes the army part went on a little too long but some of it was funny/entertaining (runs and hides).

That was something they'd done for Top Gear Live apparently, though only (re)uploaded quite recently.

True, though I was kind of wondering though if they could have extended the section with the cars doing doughnuts (e.g. interviewing a few people, seeing how they buy and set up their cars etc) and then cut out some of the toss in the desert section.

You do realise he didn't do it over and over again. They just repeated the footage. It was obviously a joke they found hilarious but no one challenged them and it made the final cut. My hope is that they listen to the feedback and make changes as things work and don't work. While the filmed episodes are in the bag they can still edit and refilm sections.

They really need to sort the American driver. There is no sense that he's actually driving fast and putting the car through a proper lap. Having him moan and say it's all crap is just dumb. While the jokes with stig got old, there was the knowledge that it was a proper race driver in the car and I was interested in how fast cars were. There is any number of US based drivers who are probably better suited to the role than some 60 year old ex NASCAR driver.

Yeah. That section was another waste of time. As you say I thought they might have May at least try out driving the car. Again they seem to think making fun of May as an old slow codger (Clarkson is older) is funny and on their adventure episodes it's it's somewhat funny but its not going to be funny to just send him to watch some kids hit buckets with sticks (or whatever).

Yeah I figured that bit but I just remember the others doing something different each time, just odd that they thought it was funny for the narrative for May to be repeatedly getting shot. Of all of them May would be the cunning one.

I reckon they should have kept Jerome D'Ambrosio, just leave him speaking French in the car with the gang having no clue what he's going on about if they need a running gag. He's ex-F1 so no slouch, and would be Stig-like in the sense that nobody knows what he's saying.

Apart from the May repeat I really enjoyed it.

It's quite staggeringly Top Gear though. Even down to having a weak(er) second episode

I have joined DriveTribe modified 911 section amongst others but I still don't know what it is!

It might just be a car based social media website.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, or maybe no one has seen the (Tom Cruise) film, but the military segment was obviously a take on Edge of Tomorrow. Clarkson even mentioned something about it before they rolled the first section.

Not that I think what they did was very good, but it was clearly the idea behind what they going for, and perhaps makes it slightly better/clearer viewing if you have seen the film!

As far as the American goes, I personally don't understand why they got a NASCAR driver? Don't they just drive round in a big circle?

episode #2 was dull, apart from the aston segment. the studio bits were painfully unfunny - worse than anything they'd done on TG - and the tyre-shredding feature was pointless. the three were also made up far beyond what was necessary, beyond even american levels.

recreating TG with a bigger budget has so far been such a wasted opportunity. "the grand tour", to me, suggests them touring each location and having a feature (a challenge, etc.) pertinent to that location. on that premise, it's fallen flat. it should have its own identity while retaining the good elements that made TG what it was - C, H & M. it just seems like a parody.

The tyre shredding thing was probably the local segment. In that video, it's mentioned that from each country they visit, they wanted to do something car related from that country. I guess in SA they were relegated to a local car get-together.

Watched it today. The Aston section was okay, but the rest of it was just embarrassingly awful. The studio sections seem so wooden, and James May looks like he really doesn't want to be there.

Enjoyed this week, thought it was quite well done. Apparently the Celeb thing is an insider joke as the BBC won't let them interview celebrities on the new show
