I wasn't a big fan of 7 Wonders the first time I played it, but having played it a few times since I've come around. Not a favourite but don't mind playing. Have had to explain the rules a couple of times too so have gotten used to that!

Survive though is ace It's probably the most combative game I own but the alliance mechanic in it works so well (controlling boats, etc).

The general what you've been playing discussion thread

I've been playing Isle of Skye recently. Sort of a cross between Carcassonne and Keyflower, but nothing like either

Quick playing, highly variable, works well 2-5, easy to learn...can't recommend it enough

I had a go of Codenames a few days ago and was immediately compelled to own it, which I now do! Brilliant game, not complicated and easy for non-gamers to get into.

Also played Galaxy Truckers for the first time and loved it!

I had it on preorder but so far Amazon has failed to deliver. My mate picked it up yesterday so I'll probably cancel now... Looks great!

We're off away for a long weekend specifically for the purpose of playing board games this weekend :geek:

Leisuregames is my preferred boardgaming shop (worth a browse if you are ever in that north London area) and they had it in stock yesterday.

You can order from their web site and delivery is generally on the second day after the order. I'd highly recommend them.

I got that, Mysterium and a Colt Express expansion from them recently. Only problem is I can't play any of them as they are all meant to be Christmas presents.

Codenames and Incan Gold today with the family. I can (genuinely) pass both of as educational for my 6 yr old.

The general what you've been playing discussion thread

I was introduced to Keyflower last night. It's a worker placement game. It was alright but I was a bit bored by it, as I was new to it I had no strategies so inevitably came last. Afterwards we enjoyed a few rounds of One Night Ultimate Werewolf and Avalon (Resistance).

Last weekend me and a few mates got a cottage purely for the purpose of playing board games... I blasted through the following:

Dead of Winter
Puerto Rico
Terra Mystica
Splendor
Alhambra
Camel Up
Seven Wonders
Citadels
Hey that's my fish
Tiny Epic Galaxies
Jaipur
Dobble
Skull
Monopoly Deal
Resistance - Avalon
Codenames
Masquerade

Stand outs for me were Terra Mystica and Citadels. TM is a lot easier than it first appears once you get into it, but clearly tons of strategy. I lost but really enjoyed it.
Citadels has a great mix of strategy and hidden roles - really liked it.

Biggest disappointment was Dead of Winter - I enjoyed it, but really wasnt all it was cracked up to be, and I can't imagine future games going down much different.

Loved Codenames, but knew I would, and Tiny Epic Galaxies was a pleasant surprise

In fact I would recommend all of the above for different reasons, except for Alhambra which I really didnt enjoy at all. To be fair we were playing with 6 which is definitely outside the sweet spot (according to threads on BGG), but i just found it totally random with no ability to make any kind of strategy - felt like i might as well have been tossing a coin for a couple of hours

The ones i enjoyed the most were the group games tho - i think there is only space in my collection for one or two, so have added One Night Ultimate Warewolf and Codenames to my Christmas wish list.

Funnily enough, I played a similar selection!

Agree with you re Dead of Winter.

Really liked Citadels, Terra Mystica, Resistance: Avalon, Tiny Epic Galaxies, Mascarade, Codenames, and I think 7 Wonders will be really good if I play it a second time and understand what I'm doing!

Also played Tzolk'in again, which is great as well.

I was wondering what mayflower was

Keyflower is an amazing game, the whole currency/auction/placement thing is superb. Well worth trying again.

I didn't edit it quick enough then haha. Maybe worker placements aren't for me.

Exploding Kittens - bit meh. No meaningful decisions, early player elimination. Plenty of better quick card games.

Patchwork - brilliant 2 player game. My 6 yr old loves it.

New York 1901 - excellent game. Very simple if you strip back the add ons but still compelling and plenty of replay-ability. This is the type of game that should sell 10x what monopoly does.

Would like to try New York 1901. Haven't played too many area control games, the main one I have is Lords Of Vegas which I must admit I didn't like too much, but I think it's the sort of game you need a game or two to get it sorted.

Recently picked up Lords Of Waterdeep and had my first game at that. That was 4 of us, and I managed to win. I really liked it, not just because I won! Good mix of euro worker-placement but with a theme that could win people around if the farming games puts them off. It's a very nicely produced set too.

We had a load of friends round this weekend and played a good mix of stuff:

Village
Bohnanza
Mafia de Cuba
Resistance: Avalon
Cosmic Encounter
Last Will

All went down well, particularly Mafia and Avalon which were both played when our numbers were greatest (nine people).

Mafia, Cosmic and Last Will were all first time plays for me. I'm not convinced by Cosmic Encounter yet, though I think I need to give it another go before passing judgement, but I really enjoyed the other two.

Who was it that was after Mysterium (when it was out of print and going for silly money)? It's now Ł25 at http://www.boardgameguru.co.uk/new-r...orders-9-c.asp
