75 apps added to the universal search function http://www.aftvnews.com/netflix-and-...-voice-search/

I guess the only UK app that will get this for now is Netflix.

Great news, this annoyed me, it was free on netflix but it pointed you to pay on Amazon.

Universal search is now live, very useful although seems limited to only Netflix from the apps I have installed. But love the fact that you have a Netflix queue/recommendations on the landing page.

Really nice update.

There also seems to be a lot of new categories added to Prime self under your videos.

Yes, mine is a First Gen device, make sure your Netflix app is up to date. You should get a prompt to update when you launch the app.

Thanks - am considering getting the first gen Amazon Fire TV as it has optical out - which I need.

Would you say that it plays everything perfectly? No audio drop outs, occassional jerkiness of picture?

Also do you use plex on it?

THanks

Plays everything perfectly, no audio dropouts. Only thing to bear in mind Amazon are likely to announce a Fire TV 3 in the next few weeks and we will then find out if they will be dropping support for the first gen. They would be silly to do that as it still works so well.

I have used Plex to test functionality and it looks beautiful but i prefer using Kodi as I found that Plex would sometimes buffer for no reason, that it can't handle DTS and that transcoded video or audio where Kodi plays everything in native format.

I do point my Kodi video library at my Plex server though so I get the video book marking sync between multiple devices.

Can't see why they would, it works great! The netflix interaction is now great, if it had a NowTV app it'd be perfect.

The only reason they would, would be due to following the mobile path and dropping support after 24 months. Would be silly as you say works perfectly as it is. All I need is Now TV and Crunchyroll and it would be the one box solution.

If Google added music and play it would be perfect. Oh and they need to stop messing about with the YouTube app it has had some very silly design choices recently.

Shame that Amazon Fire doesn't do NOW TV - or BT Sport, Eurosport Player?

I am currently using an Apple TV 3 which does NOW TV and the other two via airplay.

Of course the Apple TV doesn't do Amazon Prime though..

So annoying needing 2 or more solutions to get everything!

It has the smart TV app, it's pretty good but the last few updates have had some strange design choices like moving your sub list from the slide out menu to a sub menu and then arranged as a horizontal row of images. Suggested videos from a channel often show videos that are months old rather then new ones and once you do go into a channel and go back out you are sent back to the top of your suggested videos. And you can't play any of your purchased Google videos.

Yes you can select videos, press the cast button and have them play via the app on the Fire TV. Only tried that on android devices not iOS but as it is most likely using DNLA rather then Chromecast can't see why it wouldn't work.

Still undecided to go for a first gen or not (want optical out).

I will still need to use 3 devices!

Samsung blu ray player (Wuaki TV)
Apple TV 3 (Now TV)
Amazon fire TV (potentially the rest)

Unless you want the latest and greatest there is nothing wrong with the first gen. It's nice and speedy got a whole bunch of new features this well and works well.

I got the first gen Amazon fire tv and its far quicker than the ATV3 and especially the Samsung blu ray player apps.

Impressed so far.

It does have shortcomings - any content which should be playing at 50hz plays at 60hz:

iPlayer
Plex (some content)
etc.

Samsung blu ray player 50hz properly.

I think that is a limitation of android itself, most of the dreaming boxes only output at 60hz. I know the new Now TV box can apparently do 50hz.

It does seems to be possible on Android. SPMC changes the refresh rate but I've not seen anything else manage to do it. Even vanilla KODI doesn't do it for some reason, at least last time I checked.
