I'm about of the third of the way through (just finished Asha's first chapter) and this book is fantastic - light years ahead of Feast. It's consistantly exciting and engaging with some nice twists already. I'm totally surprised by the whole
storyline, which George did very well to keep a secret before release.

Not much of this was obvious to me!

Finished it. Really enjoyed it, but I'm still not getting completely immersed like I was in the first three - I suspect there's been such a long wait that I am now less enthusiastic about books with dragons in.

Still looking forward to the next one though. Is it finished yet? ;-)

I finished it too having enjoyed most of it. I thought the cliffhangers for a couple of characters were a bit meh and also considering we are no doubt going to have to wait 4 years or more for the next book, could it have hurt for Martin to leave us with a bit more resolution in some areas. I don't mind so much when it's reasonably imminent for the next series/ novel, but we know it just aint gonna happen here.

I really enjoyed the Reek arc as well as Jon's and the few revelations as they came along too. I'd say the only part that gets on my nerves is the R'Hillor stuff. I've re-read the whole series in the past few weeks and the red god people seem to see everything even if they misread the signs given and every prediction they make seems to come true.

suppose this might be considered a spoiler

Mine arrived on the day of release across the pond - was well chuffed. I am finding it pretty heavy going though. Only got to page 300 so far and only the Tyrion and Bran chapters are really holding my attention so far....
Seeing comments above I remain it hope that it will pick up.

First third I found completely gripping and tons was going on, the middle third things seemed to slow down a lot and the plot seems to not move much. I'm in to the final third now and it seems to have picked up again big time.

I enjoyed it but I think the long delay has stifled my enthusiasm a great deal. I was very lucky as I got into the books after graduating from uni so had spare time to blast through them all.

I think it was a bit tough as well trying to keep in mind that this is kindof chronologically similar to AFFC rather than leading on from it.

I started reading the books just before the TV series started...it meant I only had to wait a month between book 4 and book 5. I didn't enjoy book 4 that much...certainly not as much as the other 3, and although I found book 5 better than 4, knowing that there is now going to be years and years before the next book really ruined my enjoyment...much as I tried, I couldn't get that out of my head.

I know that by the time book 7 appears, I'll have forgotten too much and will need to somehow try and find time to re-read them all, or dig up info online to remind me about everything (I don't find the notes in the back helpful at all!). Overall, this one just wasn't as good as I hoped

It might be worth bearing in mind though that books 4&5 are the overflow from what George Martin originally intended for the "first half" of the story, aren't they? I seem to recall reading that he originally intended to have a 5yr timeskip after A Storm of Swords, presumably with the intention of using flashbacks in later books to cover events from that 5yr gap. Feast for Crows and Dance with Dragons came about because he didn't manage to cover everything he wanted to from the War of the Five Kings, so presumably he decided to ditch the timeskip and cover those intended events in a linear fashion with books 4 & 5, so I think a lot of the feeling of treading water (narratively speaking) in these last two books probably stem from Martin not really having formulated how he wanted to tell this stage of the story as assuredly as he had for books 1-3.

Apparently he always wanted A Storm of Swords to end at the "halfway point" for the whole story, so presumably books 6 & 7 will cover the "2nd half" and focus primarily on Dany coming to westeros and the war with the Others. Hopefully this stage of the story is more established in his mind and we'll see the narrative become more assertive again.

He's got a shedload of material to cover though, I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up as an eight book series. Mind you, I reckon the success of the TV series will put more pressure on him to get cracking with book 6, so I'm not expecting another 6yr wait this time.

I can't see them going for a season dedicated to AFFC, after Clash & Storm there is no way that HBO would accept it as a backward step IMO.

I could maybe see there being 4 seasons up to that point and possibly one covering Feast and Dance. That is of course if it makes it as far, ratings seem to be good but audiences and production companies can be fickle.

It would be nice to know if there have been any discussions on timelines for finishing the books. Obviously this one was way behind any schedule so its by no means dependable but something to be mooted would be pleasant.

But surely, from a timeline perspective, there would never be a season just on AFFC – I would assume they’d have 2 (or 3?) seasons which rearrange the material in AFFC and Dance into chronological order – that way, they combine the slower machinations in Kings Landing/Dorne etc from AFFC with the more exciting elements in Dance.

I re-read Feast quite recently, and although it’s not exactly action packed (the only action I can recall is a single scene featuring a man with an axe) there is some nice intrigue in there and I got through the book pretty quickly.
