Well, the R1 boxed set contains only the shorter (though still long) theatrical versions. At this point, the extended versions are not available in R1.

WTF is 'The Girl Trilogy'?

Thought this was known as the Millennium Trilogy?

Extras look crap.

I'm not too bothered about extras (so long as someone doesn't release an extras-packed version elsewhere just after I buy this....). Even the Scandinavian extended box set doesn't have much in the way of extras.

Glad I waited and didn't buy the theatrical versions.

Let's hope we'll also be getting lossless audio (Swedish, that is!) for all three films this time.

As long as there's an interview with Noomi Rapace in this set, I'm happy!

It's worth pointing out that, as these are the extended TV cuts, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO is likely to be cropped to 1.78:1, much like the already available Swedish extended release.

A good point which I wasn't aware of!

I haven't seen the other two, theatrical or extended - are they both in 1.78:1 anyway?

Phil:

Yeah, films two and three were 1.78:1 to begin with, given that they were shot for television.

I have the Swedish copies of all three extended cuts (sans English subtitles, unfortunately), and it's pretty clear that massive amount of good material had to be cut from Film 2 to get it down to a manageable length for its theatrical version. I don't think it would be too much of an exaggeration to describe it as a state of affairs akin to KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, where the DC essentially transformed a mediocre action movie into an excellent, politically charged epic.

Dragon Tattoo was shot in 3-per Super 35, so a 1.78:1 version will more likely be opened up rather than cropped. There's no doubt that it was intended to be shown in cinemas at 2.40:1 though.

...Played With Fire and ...Hornet's Next were shot in HD if I remember rightly - the former certainly looked like it was. (Still haven't seen Hornet's Nest.) ETA: Though IMDB says 35mm.

Played with Fire and Hornet's Nest were filmed back to back by the same director Daniel Alfredson
I discussed the extended versions with him at a Q&A for Played with Fire

The two versions were envisaged at the same time, so there are scenes in the theatrical versions which are not in the extended, so was not just a case of adding extra stuff. He edited both keeping in mind cinema and TV release.

Will be good to get with English subtitles as I have the Danish release which again only has Scandinavian language subtitles. Think this is the first time they have been released globally with English subtitles.

There has not been a version of this anywhere with decent extras, as like many Scandinavian films the extras produced on the local versions are poor. Think the only film I have seen there with really good extras was the Danish Flammen et Citronen, where the Danish version is not English friendly and only some of these made it to the English version and were subtitled. Same with the Swedish SE of Arn, although I do not have that.

This was on the R1 theatrical cuts release and seems to be MIA here so far?

Millennium: The Story: A 53 minute documentary detailing the phenomenon of the "Millennium" Trilogy and the personal history of author Stieg Larsson up until his tragic death before "The Girl With the Dragon Tatttoo" was published

I assume so as not to be confused with the US TV Series?

SL's partner is not happy with the name change on the first book as the original title is exactly what the book is all about and what the author was fighting against as well.

Also she has confirmed there is no "4th Book" just the first 200 pages and some random scenes that he would have fitted in after finishing the book but certainly not enough for someone to finish using his original material :-(

Mind you that has never stopped it before...James Bond I'm looking at you!

Seems that Base/DVD.co.uk/Blah etc are all the same place and reporting incorrect prices. Sorry about that, I'll let Colin know and see if he can do something about it.

The search tags were pretty terrible on the review so I'm not surprised you didn't find it. Sorted that now though.

And finally, hold out, this being a Momentum Pictures release I reckon it'll be bargain basement in the xmas sales. Easily £20 or less. I think somewhere was doing the DVD set for £9.99 recently (one of those mega monday things probably).
