Cruise has a bit of a racing history, with Paul Newman's team, I believe. That time might last a while.

For those who were saying that the Star in a reasonably priced car segment was 'finished' and should be dumped, yesterday's episode shows exactly why they still keep it in.

Excellent episode, really enjoyable and the Senna segment was one of the best things they've done across all the series.

They don't have to dump it but they don't need to have it on each week, if there is no one worth sticking in it that week then don't bother.

Then they could have kept the Escape to Poland bit of the German challenge.

Caught the last half hour of this - TG used to be essential viewing, but the risibly staged ‘races’ etc just drive me up the wall, as do a large proportion of their conversation.

Have to admit I liked what I saw though, barring any sight of Richard Hammond (re: ed_mcled’s copmment – I think it’s obligatory for every sane person to hate RH. His wavy hair, beads and jacket combo only reiterate that fact).

Very much enjoyed the Senna piece, and thought Cruise and Diaz were good (could have done without Clarkson’s fawning of everything either of them did on the lap though)

Out of curiosity, do they still actually review ‘normal’ cars?? I used to love that car show on C4 which did proper reviews, before that went all TopGear, lost viewers and got cancelled.

I like watching the reviews, etc of normal cars on TG too. I'm thinking the green Fiesta segment, the one a long time ago when they played football with the Aygo's (copied many times since by others - like those annoying ITV/Hyundai World Cup ads) and stuff like that.

Do recall the Renault one with the jump to the ferry at the end. Not been many since AFAICR.

One of my favourite normal car reviews was when they got their Mums involved. Captain Slow's Mum had speeding points or something.

Good show last night, but I too am a cynic and I don't believe those lap times of either Cruise or Diaz. Fixed.

Why do people with eyes who can see how much quicker those cars were going cry fix?

Does anyone seriously think a ginger kid would have been faster than 5 stone 5 foot Cruise?

I thought Cruise's lap was going to be slower than Diaz's that's for sure. His crap narrow line into the first corner, going too wide out of hammerhead, plus going onto two wheels and well onto the grass at Gambon should have made him slower IMO. Diaz looked like she carried better speed.

I been told that the lap is actually made up of several of the practice laps as they don't have enough cameras to cover the entire course!!

Going onto two wheels would have made him faster around that corner.

Would explain why we never saw Cruise on two wheels from the usual camera angle.

No wonder Kia dropped their sponsorship of CSI etc. They are getting all the advertising they need on Top Gear
Great episode but then I've enjoyed most of the others too.

I just assumed that side/shot was used so you could clearly see the car with two wheels well off the surface.

Great episode.

Cruise & Diaz was much better than expected, mainly because Diaz seemed genuinely excited by it all. Cruise almost managed to stray from his usual 2 states (1. Fake over-enthusiasm, 2. Very Earnest) too. Good stuff.

The Senna bit was excellent (although Clarkson probably should have got the Beeb to pay for a stand alone hour long doc on him), & a timely reminder of how exciting F1 used to be. Nice to see something serious on TG for the first time in what seems like a very long time too.

Veyron: Not sure if it's the new paint job, the new wheels or if they've actually re-designed the body shape, but the new one isn't half as good looking as the old one. Damn fast though! Loved the footage from inside the car as it did the run. Didn't see the point of them blurring some of the shots in post though - No need for it at all!

Even enjoyed the Snow race bit. 'I couldn't sleep, so I got up & made this one' Was kinda hoping he'd take it over one of the snowmobile jumps though.

Unnecessary seeing the film which they mentioned is due at the end of the year.

Veyron: They mentioned and showed the new slippery shape (and both are pretty horrid IMO)
Blurring: This was a tribute to the film "The Right Stuff" where Chuck Yeager breaks the sound barrier. That film is often referenced on Top Gear, and well worth a watch.

Oh I got that (excellent film that), I just didn't think it was necessary - the landscape was already blurring without adding sfx to it!

The best yardstick for Cruise's time so far is Peter Jones, as he'd posted a time in the C'eed and the Lacetti.

In the Lacetti he managed 1:46.9, 1.07 seconds slower than the fastest time.
In the C'eed he managed 1:45.9, 1.70 seconds slower than Cruise.

Put me in the "that time won't be broken for ages" camp.
