Bond Blu's to be re-launched:

MGM and Fox to relaunch James Bond DVD and Blu-Ray box sets in 2012
Quote:
In news that will not be in any way surprising to James Bond fans, MI6 understands that MGM is planning a major DVD & Blu-Ray box set relaunch in 2012 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 007 series.

The originally planned schedule to release the entire series on Blu-Ray hit the skids in late 2009 when MGM's financial woes put everything on ice. Only a random smattering of 13 from the available 22 titles have been released in the high-definition format. Since their rescue and new found financial freedom, MGM upped their home video distribution deal with Fox in a contract that now runs until 2016.

With regular DVD and Blu-Ray sales down across the industry, due largely to the ramp up in streaming services such as Netflix, the focus for many studios is to package titles attractively and hang them on notable events such as major anniversaries.

As well as Bond reaching 50, MGM is understood to be launching a Rocky box-set in 2012 to celebrate the series' 35th anniversary. Fox and MGM are prepping a "West Side Story" set for its 50th birthday in November this year.

There are no firm details available yet, but word is that Limited Edition and Gift Set options are being considered to boost sales of the Bond catalog which has been repeatedly mined for DVD releases since 1999.

The series catalogue being repeatedly mined for DVD release is, IMHO, the main reason the Bond Blu Rays didn't sell as well as expected. Especially when they were overpriced for what was a basic HD upgrade of the existing Ultimate Editions rather than something new. I also recall on the day the first Blus were issued, my local Asda was selling the DVD Ultimate Editions side by side, dirt cheap AND BOGOF. That's fruit loop marketing.

Absolutely correct, Lee. The UE DVDs were promoted as being the best thing ever, so the premium-priced Blu-rays were always gonna be a hard sell after that.

It's a shame, because IMO they really are a huge upgrade over the DVDs. The PQ is generally excellent, ditto for the sound, many errors from the DVDs were corrected, some of the existing extra features have been meticulously rebuilt in HD and they've dredged up even more extras too.

I just hope that MGM/Fox stick with the same packaging as the existing ones, because my OCD collecting nature just won't allow different looking covers. Meaning I'll have to buy the whole lot again. 2012 you say?

I was thinking about picking up a few of these in HMV for £10 each.. I assumed they'd released all of them, until I couldn't find OHMSS anywhere... then I found this thread

I have the first-edition Bond DVDs, which I collected every month back in 1999-ish... I sent off for all the freebies as well It would be cool if they did something like that for the blu-rays! Though as a hardcore Bond fan I can see myself splashing out for the whole goddamn lot in a boxset......

To be honest if they released You Only Live Twice i would have just got the first 5 Connery films and be done with it. They're the only ones i want. But my OCD was waiting for a complete set before diving in

The Casino Royale Deluxe Edition has been selling for peanuts recently, so I hoped that might be a sign that they were trying to offload them before a re-release.
Hope they do individual releases so I can spread the cost out.

No boxset for me, Hopefully there will be individual releases so I can pick up You Only Live Twice as I only really want the first five Connery Bonds

It didn't help that they were selling off regular Bond DVDs at bargain prices when they released the Blu-rays. Hopefully they'll continue with releasing classic Bond on Blu when the next Bond film comes out.
I did not know that either. Pretty sad news. As you said. They should just use the next new bond in order to get the other blue rays out there.

Sounds good. Works out at just over £4.00 per film!

I've got a £20 Amazon voucher as well... £70 = £3.18 per film...

Luckily I only bought Dr. No cheap on Blu-Ray.

Stuck in a preorder at Amazon.co.uk if some other retailer offers it cheaper can always cancel. Now I really have to sell the original 6 blu rays I was meaning to sell last year.

Are / were the current Bond BDs single disc editions?

EDIT: Pleased I waited now (due to having two complete sets on DVD).

Over 130 hours of extras, so I would imagine everything will be ported over from the U.E.s

Don't know about anything new - I would have thought something new will be stuck on there to tempt.

From the Amazon listing:

Collection includes all 22 James Bond feature films from Dr. No to Quantum of Solace and more than 130 hours of bonus features including never-before-seen content from the Bond archives, and more.

One disc of brand new bonus content approximately one hour in length.

9 titles available on Blu-ray for the first time ever: Goldeneye, Octopussy, The Spy Who Loved Me, You Only Live Twice, The Living Daylights, Tomorrow Never Dies, Diamonds are Forever, A View to a Kill and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

PS. What are the chances of Casino Royale being the uncut Australia version?
