Can't wait for these discs.
But they will still have to honour any contract for foreign countries, so could still be locked, Paramount has already done this with at least one title.

It isn't like no one didn't know about the staggering of the versions. It's very old news that they were releasing the theatricals first and the EE's later (probably around the release of the Hobbit).

The NTSC DVDs were quite soft, so I'm hoping for a very film-like presentation from Warners - no DNR! Also, I believe they shot some new interviews a while back for the DVD re-releases (the ones with seamless branching) - it's possible they were produced in HD, so they might be ideal extras for the Blu-ray.

But if the image and sound quality is flawless and the price is right, I'm happy.

Pfft - allow me to vent my spleen and register my disgust, Sir!

I'll probably damn-well cave in and buy this release anyway, being a weak-willed *******.

Why? Because Peter Jackson wants to wants to work on them personally and offer new material, rather than just rehash existing extras. When will he have time to do this, who knows, so it makes sense to release the theatrical versions in the meanwhile.

Whenever I want to watch the films though, i just watch that scene from Clerks 2 instead. Saves time.

I bought that movie, but...good grief, I forgot all about that scene! I will have to 'blow' the dust off the HD DVD and catch up with Dante and Randal again.

As for LOTR on Blu and the EE versions, we too bought the theatricals first and then the EE sets and they sit side by side on the shelf. But, we are in a bit of a quandary.

Ordinarily I would have no problems handing them off to family, friends etc and replacing them with Blurays however...

Our EEs have been carted by us to several conventions around the country and are autographed by Elijah Wood, Sam Astin, John Rhys-Davies, Bernard Hill and Bruce Spence and we are quite loathed to part with them.

It is not a question of selling autographed things (Ebay has killed off selling autographs with the 'selling a photocopy of an autographed photo' mentality anyway) but it's just that we have met these people and when you watch their films again, it does make you appreciate them more.

For us it is not just a case of sell on and replace.

I too have met all of them ( that you've mentioned - minus Elijah) and can appreciate what you're saying. I must admit though with all the DVDs I replace with blu rays, I very rarelly do anything with the DVD versions...can't you just get the Blu Rays and keep the DVDs as well?

Not that I have met any of the cast of LoTR, but personally, I would keep any signed DVDs regardless of any future upgrades.

They were new documentaries culled from existing behind-the-scenes material (footage that Jackson said was later wiped from the edit suites by New Line). No reason why they couldn't be included, but it'll be cheaper for Warners to bung the existing disc of extras from the 2-disc DVD set in there.

Yes, it'll be about as half-arsed a release as you can get, but the films should look and sound spectacular so I'll be happy enough.

Just put the bluray discs in the DVD boxes

Not too long to go now. There's a HD trailer up courtesy thedigitabits, and for those who can bear owning these awful, Oscar-winning, PJ-PreferredTM theatrical versions the set is available for a delicious £34.99 at PlayUSA.

Yes, the packaging will likely be the usual hideous mish-mash of French and English, and yes, a Customs hit is more than likely. And with the fees on top, it's nearer the £50-odd quid mark that UK retailers are asking for. BUT if you wants the North American edition - which I do - it still works out at least a tenner cheaper than any of the usual customs-free places, and if it gets through unscathed then you've got yourself a billy bargain.

That trailer got me tingling in that 'special' way. It helps that I haven't actually watched the LOTR movies in years, so I'm getting jazzed about these Blu-rays.

Mmm. Me too... I was determined not to buy the TE's as well.

Must be firm, even though the trailer did make it look very good indeed...

Curses.

If it was £10 maybe £15 for them all, then I may have caved and got em. That price is not good, as is the entire release.
Jackson has spoken about his distane over these half arsed releases, he wants nothing to do with em, so we should do much the same. Rushed cash cow release only for me, and Jackson. When they do the real discs then I will be excited, as will Jackson.

Wonder if he'll object to the money he makes from these releases?

Well he wont, but he has said he would rather do the film justice first time around and not do a double dip. Still it was out of his hands sadly, some companies want to milk the teets of the fans first. We will have Super Dooper XXxHD by the time the extended cuts come out.

Im not too bothered about the price. I can see that coming down to a reasonable level at some point soon to tempt more pre orders. Im holding back from watching til I have taken delivery of a 50-60" plasma later in the year.

I love Lord of the Rings, but its an event and only manage to watch it once every couple of years. I don't think I could watch the non EE again, so will be skipping these.
