I was always of the belief that the eggs down below were the Space Jokeys cargo, not other Space Jockey crew members.

Ridley Scott always backs this up when he talked about how he thought of the derelict as a bomber plane that drops eggs on to a civilization, they get facehuggered, aliens burst, aliens use dead people to form new eggs, aliens die, planet is left for Space Jockey colonization, plus they have a brand new supply of eggs.

I've never been one for the 'in film' discussion, Im generally much more interested in the actual making of a film, but with the Jockey bomber scenario... I just find it a fascinating concept.

Didn't it say somewhere that the eggs were fired by the space jockey onto a planet so that it could be overrun with the aliens and then the space jockey could rinse the planet for whatever resources it was interested in?

This is one of the things I like about Alien. The ship they found makes hardly any rational sense at all. I've never been clear if its cargo or if its below the ship like some sort of mine. I'm not sure I want to see a prequel, tbh, I like it being all weird.

if that's the case, what burst out of space jockey then? you'd think with all that bio-tech and whatnot, they'd have some kind of quality control

It's been there for possible centuries, the planet could have had a different climate etc, its quite possible they were mining for something else and came accross the eggs. I dunno.

32 years later and nobody has the definitive answer. I love that theory posted by Pineapples above though.

I hope Prometheus gives us some greater insight to the space jockeys, but it'll still be fun to leave some questions unanswered.

Are the new US standalone releases identical to the box-set edition, or are they missing discs/extras etc?

Thanks

No, a photo of a massive set looking very similar to the alien ship in the first film but with a massive metallic head instead of the space jockey and lots of odd barrel shaped objects all over the floor.

Don't post it here unless you want it all over the internet in a flash.

From what I can tell they are missing the documentaries since they came grouped together on another disc in the Anthology. They still have commentaries and isolated scores though.
