Alien Anthology Blu Ray 2010 - Out now

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/hero...ood-to-me.html

Quote:
In the meantime, Weaver has been living in the future by promoting “Avatar” and getting ready to revisit her past – she will be sitting down in the weeks to come to watch all of “Alien” films as part of the process of recording commentary for the upcoming Blu-ray release of the four-film franchise.

“I’ve never done that, watched all of them in a row,” Weaver said. “I just recently made my [19-year-old] daughter watch them. She had never seen them before, believe it or not. I think she just prefers to think of me as good ol’ mom, you know, not some person running around a spaceship with a flamethrower.”

New commentaries? On a set that is already dripping with extras? I can't wait for this release!

Have you seen the directors cut of Alien 3? It's actually pretty good, much better than the theatrical.

I hope that the commentaries, directors cuts and introductions made for the DVD set will be present on the blu-ray set. If not I'm not interested.

The visuals of Alien and Alien3 should look astounding on blu-ray.

I can't see the image quality of Aliens improving though. I think the master has degenerated very badly over the years (I'm sure there is a story relating to film stock on this, but I can't be sure).

Hopefully they'll be full commentarys and not 5 peoples commentarys edited into 1, ala Aliens and Alien 3.

Would love to have F/X crew commentarys aswell.

Hopefully these will be released seperately. I only want the first one on bd.

I expect the set will be costly - the quadrilogy (tetralogy!) dvd set cost a bomb a few years back.

It'll cost a lot for the first 6 weeks and then plummet, if other box sets are anything to go by. I've still not watched anything from my quad box I bought this year I prob won't now.

The supporting documentaries are really good and detailed. But unfortunately Fox hacked quite a bit from the Alien3 doc - AFAIK lots of Fincher vs Fox stuff.

Yeah, I always meant to put a couple of hours aside for those but never got around to it. I've owned it twice, but never actually seen the 'directors cut' of Alien. Am terrible!

The UK dvd set was minus at least one commentary that was on the US one
Fox are like Warner and shortchange the UK with their Bluray boxsets.

The Planet of the Apes set shows things don't seem to have changed

With the quadrilogy I ended up preordering both the US and UK versions. Neither cost more than £35 which at the time was pretty good for a 9-disc set. In the end I think the UK verision lost the branching commentaries so I sold that to a friend at cost price (he found that a fantastic deal). I never did find out if they were actually different commentaries for the theatrical vs extended versions or whether the theatricals simply cropped out the sections in the extended versions.

I saw the complete Alien3 documentary in about 2002 when it aired on C4 (It was called Alien Evolution and presented by Mark Kermode) and there was a lot of Fox-bashing.

Would be nice to see some of the famed excised footage from the first film including alternate/longer death scenes.

The UK set lost the branching commentaries, as kiran said. They added a lovely bit of replay value to the R1 set. Fingers crossed that the alternate audio tracks from the original Alien DVD are on there, though.

kiran: there was indeed alternate audio for the branching commentaries. For Alien and Aliens, there wasn't much alternate footage, just extended stuff, so the commentaries were simply shortened/lengthened accordingly. But for Alien³ there's a lot of alternate scenes, and there's different commentary for those. Alec Woodruff and Tom Gillis speak about the existing creature effects on the dog-burster scene in the theatrical cut, while on the extended version they speak about the new ox-burster instead. It's a very cool little feature, which I hope is replicated in some form on the Blu-rays.

From Digital Bits:
Quote:
Sigourney Weaver revealed that she's going to be recording brand new audio commentary tracks for each of the four Alien films - tracks that will be added to Fox's nearly complete Alien Anthology Blu-ray box set. We've confirmed this news with our industry sources, who have also informed us that the box set is going to blow away fans of the previous DVD Quadrilogy. Not only have all of those previous extras have been included, but TONS of new material has been added as well exclusively for the Blu-ray release - extras that should make the BD WELL worth upgrading to. The set will be released in mid-to-late 2010, and rest assured we'll keep you up to date on it.

My one and only prayer, is that James Cameron fixes what I would consider to be the weakest component of ‘Aliens’ and that is the green screen elements. Surely after ‘Avatar’, nothing could be simpler.

There were no green screen opticals in Aliens. Cameron famously chose to use old fashioned back-projection, because he didn't like the look of green/blue screen.
