I was looking for the ITV HD channel today and couldn't find it in the normal planner but I still have it stored in my "Other Channels". It's a bit of a pain but makes watching ITV that bit more bearable especially coming into the WC.

This is in the Northern Ireland (UTV) region BTW.

Just got an "Exclusive invitation" to "Be one of the first to get a Sky+HD 1 Terabyte box" letter through the post.

They are offering me it for £149 (£100 off)

Now I don't know how Exclusive this offer is but I'm tempted.

My current nearly 2yo HD box has been very glitchy of late and I'm unplugging/resetting it once or twice a week so this could be timely, however do you think its a good deal, should I hold out?

Got the same offer...it is a good offer , and they are only offering it to some early adopters ...i ran it past my mrs and she said they've had enough money of us ...they can swivel... ....some persuading seems likely

I think if they offer me the 1Tb box for £149, I'd probably take them up, as my Pace HD box from last year is dire in terms of it's remote control performance and frequently has issues moving through the onscreen info pane.

If you want to try and blag an invite to the offer the phone number on the card is 08442 411 206 but I'm sure they know who has qualified for the offer or not.

Well I went for it, 25 min phonecall (8 in the queue) for what should have been fairly simple order, still I should have it by the end of the month.

Well I went for it as well...

It'll be sent to people with the original Thomson box...

I bought one last year off a mate, so have been sent this offer.

Even weirder is the fact that I rang up moaning a month ago and they gave me a brand new skyhd box for free.

So I'll have 3 skyhd boxes...Think their systems have cocked up somewhere.

Soon as it come's I'll flog the other 2 on ebay...

Are you locked into another 12 month contract with this? I might try and blag one at this price.

Yes...

It's in the terms and conditions.

Some people have managed to blag it, but they are aware of who they've sent letters to, so don't be surprised if you're unsuccessful.

I've just gone for this deal and being locked into another 12months wasn't mentioned- they did try to get me to take out HD subscriptions on my other 2 boxes though.

I've just discovered the results of an experiment I conducted yesterday.

The Question:
If you record a non-HD program on an HD channel does it take up more box space?

The method:
My target program was "The Gilmore Girls" on e4 (stop that right now, I like them ok?)

The result:
The e4 recording was its normal 1% used for 54 minutes. The e4HD recording... 3%.

WHY? This will be less of a problem for me once I get my TB box but it shouldn't have to happen. In the future (distant future) when everyone one has HD and e4HD will just be e4 etc, we should have boxes that store programs in the most efficient way possible.

I would expect that anything on the HD channels will be upscaled.

New pixels will be being created...so would no doubt result in more space being created.

I've never actually compared an sd pic on an sd channel against a sd pic on a HD channel though.

Well Parcel force have been and my TB box is here, now 2 problems, #1 I have 5+ hours to clear out on my EPG, #2 Now I have to get a new extra long phone cable as my old one died a while back and I'm guessing now I have a new box I need to be connected to the phone line for another 12 months, right?

I would expect the phone line is something they will check at some point...

Can you get it to a point near a phone line and initialise a ring back?

Then leave it for a while and they'll send a letter if they can't contact it at some point which you can use another ring back to satisfy them it's at your house.

Just opened the box to look inside,

First the good things, the new remote with it's carbon look is very sexy. It's s/w is rev 8R which sounds like the last one I had, either way it'll still not have my TVs remote codes in it.

Now the worrying bit, this being a self install I expected some kind of instruction sheet but nothing is included. Now I know how to plug it all in and I'm sure anyone else would be able to copy the old connections using their old box for ref but you'd expect more than nothing. What they have missed are instructions on how to pair cards with boxes and the phone number to do that!

Add to that the label "to the installation engineer!" "it is IMPERATIVE that the over air software download is performed" is stuck to the box with nothing to say how you do that is very poor of Sky.

So what I need now is the installers telephone number (they always get thru in seconds I don't want to get stuck in the Tech support helpline queue) and info on how to do the above.

Last week i had HD installed with the self-install option, these are the two important pages in the instruction manual ...

I expected to have to call Sky to pair the box but i've not needed to, the method above worked. I just checked i had all the channels i should have and that all the recording functions worked.

Over air software download instructions :
  • Switch the box off at the mains.
  • Hold down the 'Back Up' button on the top of the box (don't know if it's in a different location on the 1TB box)
  • Whilst pressing & holding the 'Back Up' button power up the box.
  • The lights on the box should all come on and you should get an on-screen message saying the update is in progress.
Think mine took around 5-10 mins then the box will go into stand by, leave it a couple of minutes and power up the box again.

Hope this helps
