Well, I've now gone blu exclusive.

I didn't want to do it. I wanted to stay format neutral, I wanted to buy all the cheap HD DVDs available at the moment.

BUT

I got my replacement EP 35 yesterday and it is just as crap as the original one. Still wouldn't play The Thing, and still wouldn't play Transformers. The player has gone back to Play and my discs have gone on the classifieds.

I have always been balanced and neutral, but at the end of the day Toshiba's inability to make a decent deck has swung it for me

There are 2 conflicting reasons being given about why this is. 1) That the Warner Decision at the beginning of the month gave blu-ray a huge boost which in turn gave the PS3 a boost. 2) That a Microsoft parts shortage (similar to what Nintendo have been going through) lead to a shortage of available 360's.

Which is true?..... Newsflash: I don't know (but if I had to place a bet I'd be leaning towards the parts shortage reason at this point).
Well it looks like me (and Microsoft) were both wrong on this one. i.e. I can't believe this is still down to a parts shortage....

I guess the only debate now is whether the kicking that the PS3 is giving the 360 down to Blu-ray winning the format war or not....

Well the reasons are 3 fold in my eyes. Yes i agree i think the biggest factor is Blu-ray, the other reasons GT5 prologue (and other AAA games) are at last coming out. And finally, word is getting round about the build quality, recently my brother and a couple workmate were asking me about the PS3, and everytime one of thier comments was they have heared they don't break down like 360's do. (one of my workmate's is one his 3rd 360 and he's completely fed up of the situation)

sony base their figures on shipped units though do they not, instead of actual units sold. So a lot of those are probably still on the retailers shelves/warehouse.

Your probably right, better figures would come from the retailers themselves. Any idea if any of them release these figures?

It would stand to reason that its a major factor. You have a lot of hd-dvd adopters who are now looking for a blu-ray player, along with a lot of people who held back until their was a winner who are also after a blu-ray player. Does the PS3 even with its limitations have any real competition?

Very anecdotal, but I can reel off a nice long list of people I know who have 360's (or Wii's) but still dont know anyone with a PS3

The real test of how the PS3 is selling as a console, compared with the 360, must therefore be volume of game sales then, yes?

A brand goes a long way and there are huge numbers of people that will buy a PS3 regardless.

What really interests me is the question of "What next for Microsoft?"

After all they do have a history (at least with the original xbox) of just pulling the plug on a console relatively early into it's life cycle and bringing out something new. I wonder if there is an XBOX720 around the corner with a CPU to trump the cell processor and built in Blu-ray?

Personally it seems to me that Microsoft are just trying to fight wars on too may fronts. Sure they're the single biggest / richest player in the market, but fighting google and yahoo on Search engines, fighting Apple on mp3 players, trying to fight almost all other CE's except Toshiba on High Def, and fighting Sony & Nintendo on Games consoles....

And I didn't even mention OS's.

Hopefully ms will have blu-ray and hd-dvd built in with the next xbox.

Then when our tosh's have all died, we'll still have a way of playing those cheap discs.

Oh yes, the only CD site offering full quality audio samples. It seems to me, either you offer a minute of full quality audio, or you offer the whole track in rubbish quality, but no amazon and others offer 30 seconds of crap quality. There is no way I can identify whether a track is any good from that kind of tat.

they pulled the plug on the xbox thanks to nvidia. they owned the rights to the GPU and refused to make it cheaper for microsoft. this time around its ATi who made the thing and sold the design to microsoft (iirc) so they can do what they like with it and save money over time
