Maybe it's just me, but that sounded like an implicit defence of him.
If I'm wrong, fair enough.

With all due respect; you let him run riot for page after page after page, getting everyone's back up.
Then when I made a sarcastic remark you closed the thread.

I've seen others given public in-thread warnings for far less.

thevogon was a very heavy poster in this forum. He hasn't been on for a while, I'd genuinely like to hear his take on things as they are now.
I've already said if/when he does come back that I won't be rubbing his nose in it.
That post is a prime example of why people get rubbed the wrong way. I see it, the mods see it and others see it, but you preach on about civility when you are the spark that sets off the fuse. I know that if we removed you from this area of the site, then a lot of the other stuff we see would disappear overnight. It certainly calmed down the last time you were excluded anyway.

The 'boot' referred to your mod comment towards ******* btw and the poo-pooing due to you wading in with the "DEATH TO HD-DVD" comment when it wasn't really necessary.

Another thread descends into rubbish. Nice one to the usual suspects.

But two things; the player is cheap, buggy and very slow - and it's not worth getting too excited about upscaling. If you've bought a HD-DVD machine with a decent sized display device then upscaling looks pretty lousy no matter how you do it - compared to Hidef, this in turn leads you to ditch your DVD collection over time - which to me leaves me back at square one ... A HD player with a dodgy future.
I suppose that's the rub really. Whatever format we choose, upscaling is merely "useful" for now.

The only HD-DVD player that has excellent upscaling is the XE1. Which ain't cheap. The second hand ones selling on ebay right now are at least going for over £300.

I'm not going to stick my Oppo up for sale until I am sure of the PS3 in this regard.

At least it's really really thin!

The PS3 doesn't have great upscaling, it's no different to say the EP30. It's not bad it's just not the best you can get. Once they release a Blu-ray player with the reon chip (same as the XE1) then I will buy.

Even with the fresh price drops I'm glad I got the EP10, as it seems to be a more solidly built and more stable machine than the 3rd gen decks.

and MR hackable for sd dvd

I'd pay £50 for an ep35 just for the curiosity of the bitsreaming. thats a disposable amount of cash to me, any more and I'd have to believe it was a longish term investment and after spending on the ep10 I can't justify paying anymore for another obsolete player.

Do you know that from personal experience? (I am asking because now that prices are dropping so fast I might at long last take the plunge for the half dozen HD discs that interest me.)

Prices for that model aren't dropping, as I already pointed out.

You'll get it for £50 when the PS3 retails at £75.

Why do you people have to patronise everyone so much?!

never said I expected to see it for that price, just thats what I'm willing to pay for it. Thats it's perceived value to me as an existing ep10 owner.

Well, nobody could say that cheapskate started this spat, although his patronising comment isn't something that I would agree with and is not really needed.

I think we'll have to look at zero tolerance with some of you from now on. Don't say you wasn't warned.
