Angel - Season 4 [Sci-Fi Channel]

Season 4 of Angel starts on Sci-Fi channel from 1st Jan. It's gonna be on at 8pm Monday-Thursday, with a repeat at 5pm the following day. They've been ding Angel marathons the last couple of weeks for Seasons 1 to 3.

oh, this the season before it went to the law firm and had jasmin in?

watched it all again on sky a few months ago, they had it on every day, then went onto season 5.

both are good.

The picture quality on the sci-fi channel for season 1 is far superior to sky's own copies of the same episodes.

Nah - I think the Angel and Baby Connor episodes in season 3 were the worst...

I think the 2nd half of season 3 was poor and so was first half of season 4

You're kidding, right? Season 2 was fantastic! Far better than season 1! I also liked bits of 3 (espcially Pylea), season 4, and most of season 5!

Pylea was Season 2 IIRC.

Season 3 was good - the hospital confrontation between Angel and Wesley was one of the moments of the entire 5 seasons for me...a shame though as his character never really recovered - I was a fan of the cowardly, falling over Wesley of Series 1, not the broody Wes of later series

Indeed altho I did love the new Wesley, there was a part of me that missed the old Wesley although in Season 5 I think his chracter is a nice blend of both. Actually I hold up the Wesley character as one of the best and most seamless progressions of a chracter arc ever, from his first appearence on Buffy, to his last appearence on Angel I never felt that his actions/changes came out of no where as there were always reasons and motivations for his changes.

As for Angel in general I was always a bit sad that it strayed from Season 1 formula a bit too much. I enjoyed all the seasons (notable 1, 2 and 5), but 4 did suffer from an overlong arc that seemed like it was just being made up on the fly and in my mind runing Cordelia's chracter (even if her pregnancy left them few options - we never really got a decent conclusion to the Season 3 Cordy apart from the one ep in Season 5). Season 4 is good but getting back to my point about season 1 I just didn't like the almost Alias approch to story telling they took. I really like season 1 becuase it was far more episodic than the rest of the series (apart from 5 maybe) and I felt the original premise as Angel as a PI saving the helpless was really good and allowed for plenty of scope whilst sadly that angle almost completely disappeared in the following years and the show really did change completely in tone from Season 1 to Season 4 (ironically Season 5 was a lot closer to Season 1 is terms of style/plotting).

Season 4 of Angel I think eptimysis the change most of all where it really did threaten to turn into Alias where the mythology of the show seemingly takes over and the writers get so involved in the current story that you lose sight of the bigger picture. Season 4 was really just 1 long story which was a good story but I would have preferred it to have been going on in the background (or to have been a shorter arc ala Pylea) whilst we also get other plots to focus on as well. Something that I think Season 1, 2 and 5 succeed in doing becuase whilst they all have an overiding plot (well 2 and 5 anyway) they also give us intervidual episodes where that main plot fades into the background and we can have intervidual stories told (Guise Will be Guise, Blood Money etc.). Season 4 is the biggest offender becuase apart from the Vegas ep which I really enjoyed because it was a change from the norm (something the writers themselves did becuase they knew they were heading in a very arc heavy direction) there are really no other episodes that are particuarly memorble for having a distinct story, just the overly long winded, bloated main story line that dominates all the other episodes.

But to be fair I have heard that they did have quite a few problems behind the scenes of season 4 and Season 5 was definitely back on track so whereas Alias got bogged down and never recovered (season 3 onwards), Angel did manage to work it's way out of it's mess (altho with the slightly cheap Star Trek reset button used) and based on Season 5 fully deserved a Season 6.

Sorry, for the rambally nature of the post, Kudos if you got to this point...

I enjoyed all of Angel, but I think season 4 did get stuck in a rut and is probably the weakest, but it did have a few good episodes.

i have enjoyed watching all of them in the re-runs on sky and sci fi. season 5 was funny in the main, puppet time for example. and i had forgotten the pylia arc.

the jasmin thing was overly long, just because it was all soooooooooooo scripted, like the plan had been there for years for angel and darma to have a kid etc etc, it was too confusing.

always liked wes once he wasn't in buffy.

Season 4 had its moments, but it did seem to plod along in places.

Season 5 is easily my favourite of Angel (especially from 'A Hole In The World' onwards, a power-house of plotting and coolness, imo.) The direction it had begun to go was great, certainly leaves me hungry for more at any rate.

Ooh no, that honour goes to Cordelia imho.
Think about where she started (in Buffy) and where she ended (in Angel). No contest. Wes didn't change at all from Buffy to Angel and then well, it just wasn't as impressive an arc as Cordy overall.

He's well moody though in 4 and 5 - the chemistry was great in season 1 when he turned up, but it was lost from 4 onwards.

I was gutted that Charisma didn't come back for S4 (at least not full time) and that we never got full closure on the great arc that started between her and Angel at the end of S3.

Cordelia shacking up with Connor was when it jumped the shark for me.

S5 was a big improvement though.
