One of the problems with the last 2 books is that they take hundreds of pages to set up a minor plot payoff and the whole thing seems a bit of a waste of time.

eg

Plus the whole
saga - hopefully the endpoint is more than that!

The
story is also rendered pointless since the reader knows what's going on and how futile it is.

The other thing I found annoying was the late entry of a seemingly major player, which smelt a bit of Bobby Ewing in the shower.

On the plus side the
was really good and made book 4 for me.

There's a free new preview chapter of the next book out if you have the Ipad app apparently

Not really a fantasy type book fan and this is my first, my previous reads were working though all the Jack Reacher audio books so a little bit of a contrast!

Am i right in thinking after A Storm of Swords, A Feast of Crows is a bit crap? The one after that Dance With Dragons, is this better? so worth sticking with Feast...?
I've just finished listening to them all consecutively so one epic listen. Pretty good though he changes some voices a bit in 4-5. I thought 4 and 5 were both fine but introduce many new characters when you want to know about the ones you invested time with.

A Song of Ice and Fire

Is there anything approaching a release date?

Excellent chapter, whets the appetite for the next book (as if that was needed).

If you're interested there is another sample chapter available @ http://www.georgerrmartin.com/excerp...nds-of-winter/

After saying that there wouldn't be any more sample chapters, I think the release of this one points to a long wait for the next book.

GRRM has posted on his blog that Winds is still a way off even though he tried to get it out before S6. He gives the impression that there are still months of writing ahead, so maybe a publish date of the end of the year?

GRRM and Clive Barker must be having a 'who can write the slowest' competition. It's been about five years since the last Abarat book came out!

I guess given the choice between a 286 PC and that solid gold hot tub full of $100 bills and high class hookers he takes the latter

Also when you know that the TV show will pretty much finish the story for you the motivation goes down a bit...

I've basically accepted that HBO will be finishing this one off for me, and I have no problem with that. I trust 'em, they'll have input from GRRM, and I'll get closure without having to have my grandchildren read the final lines to me on my deathbed. Looking forward to the future books, but I'm not going to wait for them.

It's been so long since I read the books that the TV series has ingrained itself more in me and I can't remember the differences. If I started reading a new one now it would just confuse me.

Better leaving till they're (hopefully) done and re-reading from the beginning once the TV show is done and dusted.

I got the impression he thinks that too and so has told another writer his arc to complete ? I'm sure I read that a year or so ago.....

I had to reread all the old books prior to the last release so at least the TV show has saved me from that as story is fresher in my head.

This website has been set up specifically to remind you what's happened in the books:

Arranged very intelligently, too.
