Abandoning WMA.. going to re-rip to FLAC+320 MP3

I've fallen out with the Microsoft way of things, I think it might be Media Player not scaling to a large music collection but in any case the world has moved on since I started the great digitization of everything nearly 10 years ago when disk wasn't so cheap.

So I now want to set up a media server that can stream FLAC for within the home and maintain a mirror collection in MP3 for portable devices and the car.

I've got the hardware, my question is what's the best software to re-rip everything. I've used EAC for FLAC in the past but I suspect there is something better than I can feed a CD and have it spit out FLAC and MP3 at the same time.

Also what's regarded as the best MP3 encoder these days?

Any advice welcome!

VLC Player is excellent. You may not need to re-encode everything...

Thanks Spooky.

And yeah, I might stop short of re-encoding everything. Just change the methodology from now on and perhaps re-encode from CD the stuff I really care for.

If you were considering the Logitech Squeezebox players then the Vortexbox software may be worth a look. Turns an old PC into a FLAC/MP3 ripper with the Logitech software built in for streaming.

Or dBPoweramp is a very good ripper & batch converter but is chargeable after the demo.

I use dbpoweramp and it works superbly you can get a plugin so it does multi encode to different formats at the same time

Thanks everyone, I'll give dbpoweramp a spin!

I like the look of vortexbox as next on the list is to convert the DVD library to mkv. Sounds like that'll be an efficient way to achieve that too.

Cheers for this. Just stuck a 500GB drive into an old Socket 754 Shuttle and turned it into a Vortexbox server
