This is an interesting curio that's doing the rounds - someone has re-worked 'Losing My Religion' by shifting the key - it's not some auto-tune butchering but a labour of love. BUT it sounds really weird to hear such a familiar song in this way !

- you can also download it legitimately by clicking on the HTML5 option.

Discussions about how & why this was done, whether it's a crime against humanity, and how it hurts your brain just to listen to it are over at BoingBoing - and - Reddit

I really like REM but never had much love for this particular song. I think I actually prefer this version though.

Huge R.E.M fan, but LMR was never one of my favourite tracks, and this remix isn't changing that opinion weird/wrong/impressed/strange, can't make my mind up, lol

£8 pre-order - REM: LIVE ORLANDO, 1989 [CD]
This live radio broadcast was recorded at the Orlando Arena, Orlando, Florida on 30th April 1989 as part of their massive Green World Tour. It's a fantastic concert performance with a set list that provides a great overview of R.E.M.'s career up to that point. It also nicely captures the band as they make the transition from underground indie darlings to mainstream global phenomena.

£38 pre-order - REMTV [x6 DVD]
Live performances of the alternative rock band REM that were broadcast on TV from 1983 to 2008. Their appearances on programmes such as 'MTV Unplugged', 'VH1 Storytellers' and the 'MTV Video Music Awards' are featured as well as their performances at various music festivals and shows including the band's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.

Prince Charles Cinema - screening
Director: David Leopold, Alex Young , 107 mins
Starring: Michael Stipe, Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Neil Cole
For thirty years MTV documented everything about R.E.M.: their music, their stories, and ultimately, their decision to disband in 2011. R.E.M. By MTV is the brand new feature length documentary that follows four friends from Athens on their journey to become one of the biggest selling acts of all time. The film draws exclusively on archival events, tracing R.E.M. and MTV in real time, making it feel as exciting and immediate as it did when it was happening. This fascinating story is one part of the upcoming REMTV DVD set which chronicles the band’s special relationship with MTV through live performances, and award show highlights.

Looks to be a good price for 36 tracks + interview disc -

£10.99 - The Spirit Of Radio [3Cd] [Box Set] - released on January 26, 2015.

Quote:
3CD SET FEATURING CLASSIC R.E.M. BROADCAST RECORDINGS AND INTERVIEW COLLECTION

It s now over 3 years since one of the USA s all time great bands called it a day after having spent 30 years together - excepting Bill Berry s earlier departure due to ill health - and despite the appearance of a few archive releases since then, to suggest fans of the Georgian combo miss them like mad would be understatement of the year.

This 3 disc collection celebrates the music of REM across this lengthy time-span, and include two superb CDs containing radio broadcasts of concerts from 1984 and 1989, along with a third disc containing media interviews with the guys from various points across their career. Superb quality throughout and eclectic track-lists make this boxed-set a delightful addition to every REM collection in existence.

I always wonder with a band like this how many unreleased (be it unfinished or just not fitting with album releases) tracks are lying in the vaults which may never see the light of day.

Peter Buck always said they have lots and they would be released as a massive box set once the band broke up. That happened and it never surfaced. Then again Peter Buck was always talking about the next record as they were doing the press for the last. He's always been the keen one in the band which is probably why he's still out touring with his new bands.

I'm not enough of an audiophile to know the right words to describe what's been done, but yes, the remaster definitely loses the 'murkiness'.
Look up 'The Loudness Wars' and that's probably what's happened to it. Remastered for MP3 and CD to make it all louder.

(oh, way to reply to an old post, but there we go. Never buy a remaster, kidz, unless you know what you're getting)

'Fascinating' - unreleased outtake from Reveal (2001) - free to stream, or download after a donation towards Hurricane Dorian relief efforts.

Quote:
Iconic alternative rock band R.E.M. has shared a previously unreleased song, “Fascinating,” to benefit global organization Mercy Corps’ Hurricane Dorian relief and recovery efforts in the Bahamas. Band members Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Michael Stipe recorded “Fascinating” in 2004 at Nassau’s Compass Point Studios

“Fascinating” first appeared on the original master of 2001’s Reveal before being cut last minute, and, in fact, was singer Michael Stipe’s favorite song from the Reveal sessions (according to guitarist Peter Buck’s recollection, as chronicled in David Buckley’s R.E.M. biography, Fiction). The song was produced by Pat McCarthy and engineered by Jamie Candiloro. “It’s really beautiful,” bassist/keyboardist Mike Mills told Buckley. “It has a flute, oboe arrangement, but it made the record too long… and something had to go.” R.E.M. rerecorded the track in Nassau for 2004’s Around the Sun, but the lush ballad ultimately didn’t jibe with that spare, atmospheric album. Now this poignant outtake finally finds its fitting moment, as a means to aid the country where R.E.M. enjoyed over two months of creative retreat. “I have been fortunate to spend many weeks working and playing in the Bahamas, making friends and lots of music there,” reflects Mills. “It breaks my heart to see the damage wrought by Hurricane Dorian. Please help us and Mercy Corps do what we can to alleviate the suffering caused by this catastrophe.”

“The Bahamas faces a long road to recovery after this devastating hurricane,” says Neal Keny-Guyer, CEO of Mercy Corps. “We’re grateful to have R.E.M. in our global community of humanitarians, sharing their song with the world to help the people of the Bahamas recover and build back even stronger.”

One of my favourite albums ever, Monster, is being reissued this year. There's a remixed version of the album by Scott Litt and strangely, in the first track they've released "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?", he's taken out one of the signature guitar riffs.
