it's no surprise to hear red bull were spending massive amounts of money to get ahead, they're the man city of F1.

the fota break up can only be bad, as it now gives bernie and the fia the whip hand.

Terrible news IMHO - just when F1 was starting to get real about things and teams such as Caterham beginning to show some promise of moving into the midfield.

A real shame. The lower teams were never going to touch the big-boys but could at least add to the spectacle, they've got no chance in even turning up if the big teams spend recklessly.

I read somewhere else that the Resource Restriction Agreement remained binding for a number of years (end of 2017 was mentioned) regardless of leaving FOTA, but I can't find an official source for that.

Don't really understand Ferrari's thinking on this, they are getting so much more money than anyone else as it stands (Autosport reckoned $100 million vs $40 million for Red Bull this year), surely they can afford to spend within that.

I think even though Ferrari get more income than others, they still have the same RRA cap in terms of what they can spend.

It's a shame as they have clearly left to be able to negotiate with CVC and the FIA independently of the other teams to get either more money or less restrictions on certain things.

The RRA does indeed run until 2017 yes - From JamesAllenonF1:

Quote:
The RRA is a legally binding agreement which runs to 2017, so it is not as if Ferrari and Red Bull will be able to spend Ł100 million a year more. Meanwhile the testing agreement also involves the FIA, so this won’t change overnight.
And from his Twitter in response to whether they could start spending more:

Quote:
No. As one of the teams that quit today explained it to me, the RRA runs to 2017 and is binding.

I could be wrong, but I don't think it has a cap as such. Afaik engines and transmission are excluded from it anyway, but it was designed to stop teams ******* money up the wall on things like wind tunnels and the like. Ferrari can spend their full $100 million+ just the RRA specifies how they can spend it.

Yeah you have a set budget but there are restrictions on how you can spend it, though I think that was relaxed so you can have some more on one or the other (wind tunnel/staff/etc), whichever way round you want to use the money.

Also from F1Times tweets:

Quote:
You must give FOTA two months notice, so Ferrari and Red Bull are actually members still, and could be persuaded to return.
I wonder if they are doing a Bernie, trying to persuade the other teams to their demands in the new Concorde Agreement?

Problem is Red Bull obviously control Toro Rosso and Ferrari have close links with both Toro Rosso and Sauber as engine suppliers. That's four out of ten votes I hope McLaren and Mercedes can stand up to them and force them back onside.

I don't know whether it's worth starting a thread to highlight it, but the Race of Champions is on today / tomorrow - free live streaming:
Quote:
The 2011 Race Of Champions will be streamed LIVE on the web this weekend (December 3-4). This year it will be provided as a free service.

Saturday night features the ROC Nations Cup from 1900-2200 CET (1800-2100 GMT) while Sunday has the Race Of Champions itself from 1400-1700 CET (1300-1600 GMT).

Yeah, though as the commentators said in the final, it was hardly fair to give them the buggy to use in the final, which Schumacher/Vettel had driven many times before, but their opponents hadn't.

It's not a particularly serious event, but still should be a bit fairer than that.

It's seems to becoming more apparent that Ferrari have given notice of their intention to leave FOTA not because they don't want to abide by the RRA but because they don't believe RBR are being policed or rather that the rules aren't being enforced. That said that's not to say that they aren't just looking to make some mileage out of this in other area's, perhaps in the make-up of what is governed by the RRA? They've always been in favour of more testing, after all they chose to spend their money in the past on Fiorano, whilst others spent theirs on Wind Tunnels & Technology Centre's. Maybe they're angling for some gain in this.

Crofty's just tweeted confirming himself, Ant Davidson, Kravitz and Pinkham are off to Sky.

Not unexpected with the rumours but thats the final nail in the coffin for BBC coverage quality. The only people left now are Jake, EJ and DC. I'm more bothered about the action than all the fluff.

Will have to do a deal with my Sis to see if I can use a Sky Go account on my iPad or Mac!

On an aside - Red Bull have their event in Milton Keynes this week if anyone's forgotten. If you've never heard an F1 car before I encourage you to go - but take earplugs!

There's still Lee McKenzie!

Shame about Kravitz, glad DC is staying with the BBC. Preferred him to Brundle TBH.
