So called low noses I think are a result of the regulations trying to prevent cars launching so easily like Webber in Valencia. I hoped we were going to get noses like they had in the early-mid 90's, but apparently the "platypus" noses like the Caterham are going to be quite common.

Autosport claim 75% (8/12) of the teams will have similar looking cars McLaren have apparently taken a different direction though

can't see why not, he's got a huge amount of experience and he won't be racing on ovals.

Better picture of Caterham's nose section, it does actually step up.

I guess the drag generated by that is outweighed by the need to get clean air under the car. Still looks ugly though

That is bizarre and from that angle, really does look unaerodynamic. Don't like the look of it at all...

I'm sure its fine, a bit like the vertical micro windscreens they used to run on most cars. Dog ugly though

Apparently the low nose directive was needed because there was at least one example on the grid last year where the height of the tip of the nose was greater than the cockpit side protection of another car. Conceivably if an accident occurred in a particular way the nose could have connected directly with a drivers helmet.

So the redesign of the nose is supposed to stop the driver launching himself up. So by lowering it surely there is a chance that they will lift the car in front up/go under the car in front?

How high is the new design from the floor?

Is that an opinion or something you read? There have been numerous examples of drivers assaulting each other on the track, I don't see why his career has to be over. Maybe it is at Lotus though

I expect the thinking is that at least you can better predict and try to design for the situation where a car hits and the nose goes under another car. I'm sure I read that the FIA have been doing a lot of testing to look at the launching problem over the last few years so I'm sure they'll have taken that into account. Conversely when a car is launched it can hit anything at any angle - things like catch fencing posts - as sadly happened last year in IndyCar with Dan Wheldon.

So the McLaren web launch is at 11am today.

Those side pods just in front of the rear wheel on the William are huge!
