Heads Up! King of Kong TV tonight!

Thought about here or the TV forum but kind of thought it might be of more interest in here - Mods hope that's ok?

Never seen it, but it's meant to be very good - a documentary about two arcade cabinet players battling for the World record on Donkey Kong.

It's on tonight on Sky Arts 1 and Sky Arts HD (but not in HD according to Sky Guide).

It's an interesting docu-film to watch, if you have nothing else to watch that is

You sound quite negative. Is that because it's not in super hi def and a Sony Blu ray exclusive?

I've never read anything but praise for it.

Could he possibly just not love the film?

Worth a watch but I wouldn't say it's something you're missing out on if you don't see it. Essentially it's about who's got the highest Donkey Kong score in the world and two yanks fighting out be top dog, one of whom is a petty S.O.B. It's kind of interesting if a little geeky. I could certainly see how hard it is to rack up a great score and I understand why they want to be world champion but at times they seem to take it a little too seriously.

It's great - even if you're not interested in videogames the obsession and cliqueyness of the people involved is very compelling, even if the reality is distorted somewhat in the doc.

I think it's hilarious.

We've got a Donkey Kong kill screen coming up!

Awesome movie, and one of the best documentaries I've ever seen (though it has to be said they play fast and loose with some of the details, making one guy appear better than he is and another appear worse).

Brian Kuh(sp?) is comedy genius on the level of David Brent and Alan Partridge. The best line in the entire film comes from Steve Wiebe's daughter when they are in the car. What she says (and the pause afterward) is the best moment in the film IMO.

My friend wanted to be Billy Mitchell after he watched this. He thought he was amazing.

Sums it up for me too, it's good, but not life alterating, like 99% of stuff out there, but worth a watch if you've not got anything else to do

It's a really good watch. Even if you're not interested in retro arcade gaming or Donkey Kong, it's got a great story. It's an underdog story about a guy trying to get his achievements acknowledged by an organisation that seems corrupt. It's got some great geeky characters. Heroes and villains! Kings of their own little geeky world.

However...

Sadly, the documentary is very very misleading. It's still a great doc, but it's mostly fabricated.

The whole plot of the film is that Steve Wiebe is trying to get a #1 score on Donkey Kong, by beating Billy Mitchell's top score set in 1982, and that Twin Galaxies is making it difficult for him, because they love Billy Mitchell and do not give enough recognition to Steve Wiebe. But actually, this is the sequence:

Good doc, more tension and drama than 90% of the ***** out these days. Schmaltzy and glib at times but most US docs tend to be.

It's an entertaining documentary, if completely misleading for the reasons SqueakyG points out, I didn't even know the part about:

until I just read that. The film does a very good job of making Mitchell look like a right sour ****!

Yeah i read about the points that SqueakyG made above, but at the world record event towards the end of the doc, when Wiebe is play for 2 days straight and billy Mitchell comes in, he completely blanks Wiebe even after Wiebe say 'hi' to him. I cant understand this part if indeed they were friends before and joked about, its almost as if its staged!?

I think it's because at that stage Billy hadn't played the game for nearly a year, and Steve had been putting in several hours a day for months. Billy probably presumed (I would imagine correctly) that if he went over to talk to Steve then the gauntlet would be thrown down when he wasn't really prepared. The documentary clearly sets up in the first 20 minutes who you're meant to be rooting for and who you're meant to dislike, so I think Billy was on a hiding to nothing from the start. Having said that, he does come out with some unbelievably cringeworthy statements.

I watched this a few months ago and really enjoyed it. I knew it wasn't 100% accurate in it's details, but it was very entertaining.

Which is a shame, as you get the impression that even if the doc maker had stuck to the facts, it would have still been as entertaining.

"Billy Mitchell always has a plan"

Sadly, the more you read into the events, the more of a hack-job it becomes.
