Best for less? (Les Enfants du Paradis, The Red Shoes...)

So friends the time has finally come; the bank account is swollen, the shelves have been cleared and I now intend to seek out the best possible DVD versions of my favourite movies, beginning with the following:

1) Les Enfants du Paradis
2) The Red Shoes
3) Nights of Cabiria
4) Andrei Rublev

The sharp-eyed amongst you would have noticed that all these titles have been adopted by Criterion and, while I'm appreciative of the quality of many of their releases, I recoil from the price, having been nastily stung for taxes when ordering from them previously.

Regular forum trawling has led me to believe that ports of some Criterion titles are sometimes made and released in different markets. Does anyone know if this applies to any of the above titles?

You can get all four of the above for a customs-friendly £17.99 from CD-Wow (or less if you order from their Norwegian site, at www.cd-wow.fm and change the currency at the credit card details stage). As discs, they're all highly recommended.

Narshty, many thanks! Does their free delivery extend to the UK? Also, forgive me, but how do you mean change the currency?

At the stage where you enter the credit card details, there's a drop-down menu with various currencies listed on it - select the £ listing, and it'll charge you in sterling.

If you're really into Andrei Rublev, you might want to consider getting the 204-minute version from Criterion and the 180-minute version from Artificial Eye (or from Ruscico or whoever distributes their discs overseas). Not only do you get two very different versions of the film (the shorter one is director approved, but who knows if he did that under duress or not), you get two different and equally good sets of extras.

Also, the Artificial Eye version is anamorphic and the Criterion isn't.

I don't own the Criterion but the Carlton disc of The Red Shoes is mighty fine and can be had for a fiver if you look about; HMV had it for that price very recently...

Cheers Gary, I read the dvdbeaver comparison, which says the new Lizard edition is the best possible picture, but my Russian's rusty...

It's kind of hard to choose between the two other versions, especially given that quote from Tarkovsky saying that he thought the latest 186 minute version was the best. I think I'll plump for the Crit now and maybe get the other one as and when funds allow.

anephric, I've got the Carlton Red Shoes disk, but the extras on the Criterion one are hard to resist. However, cd-wow didn't have it so I'm going to have to find it elsewhere...

I too am sorely tempted by the 'Scorsese Red Shoes memorabilia'...

Can't justify splashing out twice for that, tho. I'm trying to give up double-dipping. It's a decadent thing...

Yes, indeed it is Natski; be a good idea to stick the whole lot, complete with affiliated links, in this Forum's bargain thread? (The effects of nabbing a good bargain are plain for all to see )
