Seeing the replays there was a bit of a decent gap in the midfield and some thought that as an opportunity to floor it early and catch out the front runners by the start/finish line. But had to slow again catching this behind out.

It happened before Bottas even started, he has the right to choose his starting point.

Have they gone for a red because they don't trust the pack for another SC restart?

I can't complain as it's preserving racing laps.

Kvyat under investigation for the start pileup. Could Russell get a point in the end?

I thought at the time there was a gap in midfield where someone floored it then slowed down, triggering everyone behind.

Looking at this, it could be George’s fault

Interesting.

My instinct was of course to blame the driver(s) who accelerated into the back of someone else. But of course that is a cognitive bias, based on the rule of the civilian road, where it is a driver’s responsibility to leave a braking gap to the car in front. And so a concertina crash is the fault of the driver at the back.

But in motor racing, there has to be an understanding, perhaps a trust, that the driver in front of you will drive as fast/best they can, and not brake inappropriately, otherwise there would be carnage.

So I can see how Russell’s rapid acceleration then brake is perhaps the ‘initiating factor’ of this incident. I’m reluctant to say “fault”, because I think it is multifactorial and blame is not binary. But very interesting all the same. Would be fascinating to listen in to a group of stewards and drivers discussing this calmly.

Kvyat and Giovanazzi chiefly to blame for allowing gaps to develop, which then concertina’d

I thought the main gap was in front of Russell?

And despite Michael Masi’s insistence that the safety car lights didn’t go out late, Palmer disagrees

Will Buxton’s COVID positive now, and yet they’ve still sold 40,000 of the 100,000 tickets for Turkey... this won’t go well.
