One thing which I had been really looking forward to seeing was the flashback scenes. An early trailer for the show clearly showed a scene with the mad king torturing and killing Ned's brother, but it never appeared in the actual show. I wonder if they are saving it for later, or it will appear in deleted scenes?

I have to say, I enjoyed the show far better before I had read the book. I read the book between episode 8 and 9 and although I enjoyed 9 and 10, it just didnt have the same impact as of course I knew what was happening.

On the flip side, I am very much enjoying the second book, TV show be damned!

Only thing I couldn't remember was who it was that Cersei was sleeping with in this episode? Have we seen him before? Assuming from the comments before that it's a Lannister?

Excellent end to the series. Scene with Robb Stark being 'crowned' (can't think of another word to describe it) sent shivers down my spine.

He was Roberts squire and gave him the wine. A cousin to Joffrey I thinks.

He's Cersei's cousin Lancel Lannister, the son of Tywin's brother Kevan Lannister (the guy who looks a little like Tom Wilkinson in Tywin's war tent). Lancel was the squire feeding King Robert his wine during the boar hunt. Joffrey has no Lannister "first" cousins because Tywin and Jaime have never "officially" had children (which obviously means by blood he has no cousins at all given Jaime is his father).

I must be the the only person that doesn't like Lord of the rings i just dont get it!

Game of Thrones on the other hand just kicks the ******** off it, this is how to write about characters it doesn't matter where and when a story is set if you have great characters then it just works.

My only dilemma is whether or not to read the books or wait for the next season, HBO you've done it again hats off to you!

Can't understand why Joffrey is still bethrothed to Sansa? What's the reasoning behind that? Why would he marry the daughter of a traitor?

It is a political alliance - the Starks actually used to be the Kings of the North before the Targaeryans united everyone behind 1 king. It keeps all their hordes in check to have Sansa a effectively a gilded prisoner.

regarding GoT vs LOTR. My wife HATES all things LOTResque but has been rivetted by this and was peeved that I didn't wait for her to get home (she was a couple a mins late!) before watching the season finale.

In was really interesting for me comparing my view of how the episodes went as a book reader (eg Ned's death) vs her reactions.

Really? I find it weird that you wouldn't compare them, not identical but surely similarity's

Yeah I have the same views as your wife, I appreciated the film as in it was well made and peter Jackson is a great director but never liked the story.

Regarding the book would it be worth reading the First GOT book i haven't read them as i was put off them by LOTR but love reading

I guess my only problem is i would probably not stop at the first one!

Not really, I don't see it either. They're both fantasy based but in no way similar. Less wizards here.

Is it worth reading the books? I'm enjoying the series. How many are there so far? Does series one tie in with one of the first books?

I know, google, but you can't google this for spoilers

That is almost impossible to answer as it depends on if you like his style of writing.
Compare me and a close friend - we are both SciFi Fantasy nuts. He is well into Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time; I couldn't be bothered with it.
I like the GoT books but he read the first and had enough.

Latter series are unlikely (almost impossible to be IMO) 1 book = 1 series based on the way he has written them since (for example) 2 books deal with the same time-frame but the stories of different characters during them.

One thing confused me in the last episode. Not sure if this is a spoiler or not as I have not read the books.

That's him: Gendry, King Robert's illegitimate son. He was introduced earlier when Ned was following Jon Arryn's trail.
