Is there a date for season two at all? Really looking forward to Monday, picked up the books 3 for 2 in Waterstones today so as soon as the series is over, going to read book one to find the extra back story and plot and then move on to the other books!

As I mentioned a few posts ago, the likely start date for season 2 is around April.

12 seasons is a far higher number than realistic, and it's only George R. R. Martin himself that has mentioned splitting books over more than one season. The producers haven't commented on this, and already it looks like the next book, A Clash of Kings, is getting 10 episodes despite being quite a bit longer than A Game of Thrones. I admit, I can't see how A Storm of Swords could be fit into one season.

A more sensible route might be to just keep telling the story and not stick to the start/end points of the rest of the books for each season. Especially since the chronology begins to get a bit muddied as you reach the end of the third book which overlaps with the fourth, and then the fifth occurring simultaneously.

I have a feeling that we will get up to A Storm of Swords at least with the TV show, but to the very end? Wouldn't count on it. Remember though, the people who made the decisions to cancel shows such as Rome and Deadwood aren't calling the shots at HBO any more, and numerous comments have been made about how they regret those decisions in hindsight.

Game of Thrones has been a ratings success, although not a runaway one, but it's increasing consistantly. HBO are more concerned with how many new subscriptions they are getting and how the DVD/Blu-Ray sales are. In addition, the sales of the show to overseas markets has made Game of Thrones one of their most profitable shows ever already.

Also a show like this has the opportunity to build it's audience between seasons with word-of-mouth and dvd (sales of which will no doubt be huge) just like 'True Blood' did. That show didn't become a huge hit until season 2, when lots more people started tuning in having caught up.

Fingers-crossed that they got to town with the Blu-ray release. If ever a series cries out for lots of extras like interactive maps, family trees, behind-the-scenes docs, commentaries & deleted scenes/extended episodes, it's this one.

If done well, it would be the first series blu-ray boxset i'd consider buying at extortionate day-one-release prices.

The first two books are under 900pgs long each whereas the other books are (or will be) over 1000pgs long each, so George R. Martin suggested they might do two seasons per book from the third book onwards.

Have they confirmed 10eps for next season? I would have thought they'd shift to the more traditional 12ep length next season, which would be more than enough to cover A Clash of Kings as that's only 68pgs longer than the first book.

i expect it will be a question of cost. 2 extra episodes could cost an awful lot of money.

Still not sure what all the uproar over Eddard is.

I don't recall outrage when (big spoiler for those who haven't seen Pillars of the Earth yet):

Maybe it's because the actor/actress wasn't as prominent in the promotional material...who knows.

Maybe it's because no-one likes Rufus Sewell and his wonky eye.

Didn't they? I thought it was quite well received and I liked it, wonky eye notwithstanding. I don't think Game of Thrones is any great shakes over it.

Not as good, but still enjoyable. As for his point, I feel it wasn't as big an impact because you knew the show and story was going to be over in a few more episodes anyway.

so as it stands as of now, 9 episodes shown, who knows that joffery's mother and father are brother and sister and he's not the true heir? littlefinger and the eunuch?

Just to draw a further comparison to Dune (and I haven't read ANY of Martin's books but I've read all of Herbert's) it seemed pretty blatant from the start that Ned was pretty much like Duke Leto, strong, redoubtable and far too honourable, when every other House is insidious and duplicitous. So it seemed pretty obvious he wasn't going to last long, particularly after going to King's Landing (essentially the same as Leto going to Arrakis). Also, it seems none of the Stark scions could become what I presume they're going to become whilst still in their father's shadow. So I wasn't surprised. Still gutted, but not surprised.

Didn't Ned have a message sent to King Robert's brother?

yes, but only that he was the rightful heir, i don't know if he went into the how and why. but i seem to recall either littlefinger or the eunuch asked ned why he let the queen know he knew her secret.

it's a shame the queen still has sansa, otherwise jaime lennister would be a dead man.

I'll spoiler "who knows" as I can't remember if they've mentioned this in the show earlier this season:

I think, like the book, that's more of a shrewd guess than actually "knowing" on that character's part.
