Non-book reader here myself but I think I can see how this all will play out. The next few series will be lot of fighting between the houses, main characters getting offed etc. Zombies will attack from the north leading to an uneasy alliance between the families but the zombies will be too strong. Hot blonde chick will come back with dragons and kill all the zombies* and be queen again and probably marry either Jon Snow or Rob.

*they seemed to make too deliberate a point about their weakness being fire.

There I saved ye all about 7 years

I agree.
Although that didn't stop the TV writers of True Blood.

Just as long as the nudity doesn't drop off. Danaerys has kept her kit on for far too long now IMO

Off topic, but can you expand? - Not read true Blood books, but enjoyed the first series or so and found it's turned into more of a comedy soap opera by the end of the last series

Great episode. As well as the climax, there were so many gems in the other scenes. As usual, Tyrion got all the best lines, and his 'efforts' in the battle were very amusing. Jorah suiting up, and I particularly loved the scene with Maester Aemon and Jon - I remember that being especially touching in the book.

Also very interesting to rewatch the chaotic slow-mo scenes when Joffrey's ruling is made - Varys sprints over to implore the Queen to do something, whilst Littlefinger stands perfectly still and enjoys the carnage - the swine

A character in True Blood was killed off quite early in the books,
but they kept them in the series and killed off someone else instead.

I wonder if they have softened Cersei's character slightly for tv? I started reading the book a little while ago and she seems a bit colder in the book. I haven't got to the execution yet but in the tv show it appeared that she was trying to stop Joffrey as if she didn't want Ned killed.

Joffrey seems to be universally despised. I hope nutters don't confuse fiction with reality and start sending the young lad playing him hate mail. He's bloody good at playing a baddie for someone so young.

They handled the scene with Aemon perfectly imo, really loved that scene from the book and it actually shocked me a lot more to learn there was another surviving Targaryan than Ned's death (which they also handled superbly this week).

They've softened Cersei massively for TV imo, mostly down to casting Lena Headey I think (I don't think she's at home playing nasty), however Ned's execution & the reactions from Cersei and Varys are exactly how it was in the book.

I think the boy got it wrong when he said the women were soft, his mother is the cold-heartest most shrewdist planner of the lot of them, and if she wanted Ned alive it wasn't out of compassion but it suited her plans better (less likely to be war for starters I imagine if his death is not there to be avenged). Have to wait and see what happens to Neds elder daughter now.

And this over-reaction from readers/viewers annoys me, its these sort of people that make us get this homogenised product where everything is wrapped up in a happy little bow, its nice to see a story mirroring real life for a change, besides didn't Obi Wan Kenobi die in Star Wars? I like a story to be fresh myself and unpredictable, not oh he'll be ok he's a main character, wheres the tension in that?

I know one thing, I thought Game of Thrones had next to no chance of making it to 12 seasons when they announced that plan a few weeks back, after the reaction over Ned's death I'm now thinking it will struggle to make it past 4 seasons without alienating many mainstream viewers who are seeking swift "justice" and "come-uppances" within the plotline. This is a long, slow-burning fantasy series that at times can feel incredibly cynical and downbeat, and the fantasy elements aren't going to just hit us in the face at the end of the season either, but bleed in slowly.

I really hope I'm wrong about that, but the books just aren't written to be crowd pleasers, and I think just being damn good television isn't enough to maintain what must be a costly series (and about to get costlier in s2 no doubt).

Agree with this HBO's Rome only lasted 2 series because it was too expensive. As far as GoT goes the darker the better for me but this will keep the viewing figures down.

So, is this going to be, 1 season = 1 book? and why would there be 12 seasons if there's only 7 books planned?

How the hell could they tie something like this up if they cancelled the show?

I disagree they've softened her - truth be told, I think they've got her just right in terms of her appearance, her cunning and her motivations. I would say that they've made her more sympathetic, but not at the expense of softening the character if that makes sense
