Should be very clearly seen.
(VERY hard to keep potential spoilers vague in this thread!)

Alan Sepinwall (a TV critic who is always worth reading) and Dan Fienberg review Game Of Thrones in their latest podcast:

http://hitfix.com/blogs/whats-alan-w...dings-and-more

They've seen about half a dozen episodes. Fienberg has read the books and thinks it's a really great adaptation. Sepinwall hasn't read them and in fact doesn't like fantasy in general -- but he loved this. Their opinion was that it was really, really good and could well do for fantasy what Deadwood did for Westerns.

Sepinwall mentioned it being initially hard to keep track of who everybody was, but no more so than learning about the Barksdale crew in The Wire. And he didn't really get who Theon was. He also thought it took a few episodes to show just how great it was, and again compared it to The Wire, Deadwood and The Sopranos in that regard.

The podcast has some discussion of what the show's about but is very light on spoilers (Sepinwall in particular is anti-spoiler anyway, forbidding discussion of the next episode's trailer from his blog when he writes up a review).

I don't think I can get any more excited!

Sepinwall is one of my favourite and most respected TV critics, so I'm delighted and relieved to see that he liked it. The podcast amused me because they gave one of the worst descriptions I ever heard of what the show is about (and they acknowledged that they did a really bad job!).

I always find it hard to summarise when I'm trying to get people interested in it!

Yeah, having the same problem selling this to my Mum. She loves historical dramas, (The Tudors, Spartacus, Borgias, Camelot...etc) and I explained this is full of knights, drama, intrigue, etc. Got her interested until she asked, "What era is it set in?" ... and as soon as I explained it's not set in the past but an alternate Earth-like world ... "Stop! ... sounds like Sci-Fi/Fantasy nonsense ... not interested!" is the reply.

Yeah, I do sometimes think of saying it's medieval and glossing over the fact that it's set in Westeros and not England... hopefully by the time they realise they've been duped they're hooked (although The Wall is going to be a shock if they're expecting Hadrian's...).

I think I was told once that this story is losely based on the War of the Roses. Not sure how true that is, but you could sell it like that!

I do sometimes mention that was its inspiration, and I think it helps. Good point.

Does this first season just cover the first book?

Or more? Or less?

Answers in a spoiler free PM would be ace!

The author himself has said recently that the first (and second season if it happens) will both cover the first two books, but from volume three onwards, they will require two seasons each.

So that's potentially twelve seasons in total if we ever get the full seven novels completed.

One season per book according to the producers.

Because of the structure of the books, isn't it going to be impossible to do a book a season after A Clash of Kings?

Weiss reflects, "Well, when we get to books four and five, they all take place concurrently, so there would need to be some shuffling around there to make them work. And Storm of Swords (book three) is extremely long. But really, the only way to tell how they'll lay out over a season is to do the work and lay them out. It's hard to predict until you do it."

Guys i have the book sitting at home, never read it ...

Torn between reading it and then watching the show or watching the show first without reading it.

Thanks for the answers guys.

Sounds good, but at least I'll only have to read one book before I can start watching
