Shame they didn't have the duel between Ser Waymar and the Other though.

Yeah abit of fighting would have been quite good, but I think they did a good job of condensing it down without missing out anything important.

It might have been mentioned before but they swapped around who got beheaded by Ned too.

George R R Martin's "Game of Thrones" - **No book spoilers**

Time for that other thread methinks.

Should it not be the other way around seeing as this thread is spoiler ridden already?

Preview was incredible.

Read A Game of Thrones nearly four years ago and haven't touched the others. Think my hype's at a level for me to tackle them now. Just need to decide whether I need to reread the first book or not.

You're really missing out then! AGOT is fairly pedestrian fantasy until (MAJOR spoiler, you've been warned)
. Picks up after that, but ACOK is where it really kicks off.

I was waiting until the series ended

I did love AGoT though and it's becoming more and more obvious that I'm missing out on further books I'd love waiting for something that'll possibly never happen.

Figure it's time I catch up so I can join the livid group of fans awaiting the final books.

Never read the books, but been keeping an eye on this expecting disappointment as I love fantasy based stuff. Have to say that preview was stunning, especially considering it's TV and not a movie.

Eagerly awaiting the first Ep now

There's a Book Show Special on Atlantic just before the first episode (20:30 on the 18th). No idea if it will contain spoilers. A preview (perhaps the one already shown on HBO) is being shown at 22:15 on the 16th.

(Posted in both threads.)

The thing that has got me with the trailer is that its billed as a fantasy, but no monsters, elves, wizards etc, just blokes on horseback with swords. Is there much of fantastical element in this story, or do I have to give up on hoping to see some monsters?

A bit hard to answer without giving spoilers away, but it is fair to say you will probably be disappointed by the monster count if that is what you are after.

Well it was part tongue in cheek, because what I want in a fantasy of this ilk is total stereotype, but part trying to define what it is, in those terms, because it keeps getting compared to Tolkien and I do like and want a good monster. Now it sounds like its going to be great on its own terms, just wondered if it does scratch the monster itch or is totally real. For perspective I enjoyed Legend of the Seeker (sorceror itch, similar malady), but didn't bother with the second season because it was pretty journeyman (cough Star Wars cough) but enjoyed it never the less.

As Art said, it's a very difficult question to answer without giving away spoilers. The series focus is much more on the characters and the human conflicts that happen, as with much of HBO's programs. Some of the characters in the story are monstrous themselves in their actions, and that is where much of the draw comes from.

That being said, you will see in the opening scenes of the first episode that there IS an element of what you're looking for which may or may not develop as the series continues.

The monsters you see in the trailer are the only ones you get, but there is a classic fantasy creature that appears right at the end of the first book/will be shown at the end of season 1.
