I think it's:

THE MAGICIAN'S NEPHEW,
THE LION, THE WITCH, & THE WARDOBE,
PRINCE CASPIAN,
VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER,
THE SILVER CHAIR,
THE HORSE AND HIS BOY,
and THE LAST BATTLE

The chronological order of the story line is different from the original published order and there's arguements for reading them in either order.

ah well i've ordered The Chronicles of Narnia all in one book and it's got them listed as:

1. The Magician's Nephew
2. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
3. The Horse & his Boy
4. Prince Caspian
5. Voyage of the Dawn Treader
6. The Silver Chair
7. The Last Battle

so I'll take it from there

Thanks for the replies

Its only 1 thats the issue and written out of sync isn't it? I've read that one after LWW and it makes better sense then.

shall have to ring dad and ask him to bring them all down, i fancy reading them now, not sure i ever got past 1 and 2.

yes, iirc, TLTWATW was written first, but was actually knocked into 2nd place, chronologically by TMN ...

I read them all a few years ago. They start off ok but go a bit mental towards the end.
He was apparently not very well/dying while he wrote the last one (I think I read that somewhere). It shows.
A bit like the Goremenghast books, the first two are great, the last one is rubbish (and he was dying/ill when he wrote that).

So, budding authors, don't bother writing something if you aren't feeling well, it'll be rubbish!

having just "read" them all for the first time (audiobooks in the car), i'd have to say this order is the one you should use :

THE LION, THE WITCH, & THE WARDOBE,
PRINCE CASPIAN,
VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER,
THE SILVER CHAIR,
THE HORSE AND HIS BOY,
THE MAGICIAN'S NEPHEW,
and THE LAST BATTLE

Chronologically THE MAGICIAN'S NEPHEW comes first, but i think you spoil a lot of TLTWATW by not having it first. Plus when you do get the The magicians nephew it answers some questions that had you read it first, you wouldn't have had yet.

and yes, the last battle is utterly bonkers.

Well, horse and his boy for me as the book says its No 3. But from above it appears not to be. Whats going on?

Sure i remember reading one where at the start, the 4 kids from Lion, which, ward were on a train station and sucked into narnia, but that does not appear to be this one.

http://www.factmonster.com/spot/narnia-books.html

"But Lewis, who had written bits and pieces of the books at different times, also noted that the order probably didn't much matter: "I'm not even sure that all the [books] were written in the same order in which they were published."".

Also, he wasn't dying when he wrote The Last Battle, I must be getting him mixed up with Mervyn Peake and Gormenghast.
