There's a whole page on Tower of the Hand about that, well worth reading. I spent some time going through that site before my last re-read of the books and also referred to it as I went through - well worth it. I'm sure I don't have a complete handle on who everyone is and what they're all up to, but I feel like I do.

Great news about the release date. With a bit of luck he's now got a very clear idea of how it's all going to pan out and he can write the next one a lot quicker.

Ha! As I recall when he originally decided to split Feast up into two books, everyone was very confident that Dance would be out imminently, given that he'd pretty much already written it .

Yeah, but . . . it'll be different this time . . .won't it?

Anyone else reckon we should have a new topic for the new book so we don't need to worry about posting spoilers for the old ones?

Yes please, new topic.

Any ideas about how long the next book will take to write would be complete guesses. There was a five year gap between book 3 and book 4, and a six year gap between book 4 and 5. On the other hand, the first 3 books all came out within a 4 year period. He mentioned these last two books were very difficult to write due to the part of the story he was trying to tell, wherein a lot of characters meet/certain actions happen that require precise timelines and it was very hard (and very important) for him to get it right. Maybe the last few books will be the home stretch and far less taxing - especially since A Feast for Crows and A Dance With Dragons deviated from his original idea of the story's flow (there was supposed to be a five year jump between book 3 and 4, instead he decided to tell that part of the story), so now he can get back to his original plot outline?

Greatest Fantasy series EVER! (once he finishes it hopefully)

Makes Lord of the Rings read like something written by Enid Blyton.

Very much worth it. I have yet to find a person who read the first book and didn't love it. I lent a copy to a friend and he gave up about 50 pages in which was unfortunate, as that really wasn't giving it a fair chance. And he was so very close to the shocking "the things I do for love" section, which I'm sure would have hooked him.

Well, that is a little Hyperbolic! I'd say there's a lot to love in both. While LOTR might lack for characters, the depth of the world is unparalleled.

Definitely great books, though, Heady.

A somewhat disenheartening article at The Guardian today about the writing of the NEXT book:

Quote:
"Hopefully, the last two books will go a little quicker than this one has, but that doesn't mean they're going to be quick," says Martin. "Realistically, it's going to take me three years to finish the next one at a good pace. I hope it doesn't take me six years like this last one has.

Let's send him angry emails until he delivers!
Or just read something else til then.

That said, if he takes three years each for the next two books the TV show is going to have to make up it's own ending isn't it? Unless it splits Storm and Dance into two seasons each and runs for a total of nine...

As far as I'm concerned he can take as long as he wants if it means he can keep up the quality. As long as he is dedicated to actually finishing it at some point!

And doesn't keel over. At 62 now, he'll be 68 if the next one takes as long. And 74 if the finale is similar. Doesn't bode well....

HBO don't always run each year. I'm sure Sopranos had a couple of years where they didn't have a season.

Anyway, given their past track record with non-contemporary dramas let's see if they even get as far as a third season. Most likely they won't.

Halfway through ACoK and it's perfect...

...except for all the Catelyn (and some of the Bran) chapters. I'll get a stream of three or four awesome POVs setting up some major events, turn the page eager to see which awesome plot is going to be pushed forward, and then see Catelyn's name on the top of a page and my heart sinks and I end up putting the book aside for a while. I'm beginning to think that GRRM is intentionally trolling me.

Anyway, I'm wondering if there's a preferred place to read the Dunk and Egg books. I was planning on waiting until I'd read all five main books before reading the novellas, but I'm wondering if there are major connections that mean it's better to read them in published order.
