I've just started re-reading storm of swords, I got most of the way through about a year ago but gave up so have restared.

I've got to echo the sentiment above :

but given the huge amount of time i've already invested I dont really want to give up

According to one of GRRM's editors, the book is five chapters away from completion. Thank God!

Where's that from?

I'll believe it when I see it, etc.

Read it at Tower of the Hand, there's 2 different sources for it. I have my fingers crossed.

No apparently that's correct 5 chapters, though I suspect once they are done it will go through the lengthy editing phase.

Don't think he will be doing much this month he's at Octocon in Dublin and spending a few weeks in Belfast at the filming of the TV show.

According to GRRM the book has 3 chapters to go. Met him last night in Belfast.

Not sure it means much since I reckon it still needs to go to editor etc

Probably less editing involved? Maybe Bollecks can tell us about that. When I read established writers' later work I certainly feel the editing has massively reduced. (I guess it's more noticeable with someone who writes so badly, but The Da Vinci Code felt like no one had bothered to edit it at all and it was significantly longer than his other stuff.)

you're probably right that there won't be too much editing, though I heard a rumour that as with the last book there are way too many chapters so some are coming out for the next book, so that might be a long process.

Reckon he'll have it out before the start of the HBO series

A DANCE WITH DRAGONS HAS AN OFFICIAL RELEASE DATE!
Straight from GRRM's website: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/if-update.html

July 12th 2011

Sounds like it's an absolutely massive one. New cover art on the site suggests the paperback release will be split into two volumes like A Storm of Swords was.

Nice, pre-order time. Wonder if it will be out as an ebook?

I do wonder if its been timed to capitalise on the TV Series?!

Those were my initial thoughts too but I couldn't give a toss - just want to read it!!

Hopefully the remainder of the series won't be light years away but after the way this book went I really won't be holding my breath!

The worst thing is I have forgotten so much of the story (I even reread it once over a year ago pending one of the release dates) that I will have to read it all over again!

I've read Game of Thrones and Clash of Kings so many times now I know the story backwards, but I will definitely need to re-read Storm of Swords and Feast for Crows before July!

Good news. I have only read the first two. Better get a move on then!

Wouldn't it be ironic if the next book is a 300 pager

I'm going to be reading the chapter summaries at Tower Of The Hand rather than slogging through the old books again. (I just don't have time to get through them all for a second time!) Great news on the release date. GRRM's recent updates have been positive (about closing off this or that problematic part of the book) so I hoped this was coming.

Looks like I started to read them at the right time, I read A Game of Thrones before Christmas and am currently read A Clash of Kings.

Can someone give me an idea of who
is suggested to be? It will probably be really obvious when its mentioned, but I only remember vague allusions. Thanks
