I'd like to apologise to everyone. I got up feeling particularly bad this morning, the news about Iain further saddened me in addition to Lou saying how death had changed him and I just found myself spewing my feelings out in totally the wrong place and I'm a knobhead for doing so. Sorry guys.

You have nothing to apologise for so dont need to.Cancer amongst many other dieases is a terrible way to go and has taken so many already young and old.
You need to talk to someone,a good friend or your partner if married or even someone you dont know that will listen as its better to talk about it.Dont be too hard on yourself for feeling like this either although guys tend to hid their feelings, its natural to grief and better than keeping it in.

Steve I took it off course with my own diverse rant, don't worry buddy

I'd had a couple of sherberts that night, which is always the worst time to browse forums!

Very sad, R.I.P. Best sci-fi writer of his generation (or at least my favourite).

Just seen this. Have had experience of cancer within our family, including pancreatic, lung and lymph node. It's an evil, evil disease and something that touches most of us at some point in our lives, either personally or closely.

And Steve, you seem like a canny nice bloke, I hope some peace and comfort comes your way, so you can do the thing your dad wanted you to do the most - enjoy your life. Hope things are improving.

Sad news, this has really affected me as my Dad has terminal Leukemia who is very matter of fact about it and I was only talking to him about Iain Banks last month especially about his statement in April

For those in Scotland or who can access BBC2 Scotland (970 on Sky), there is an hour long interview with Iain on Wednesday night. They were obviously hoping he would be around for the broadcast

I haven't read Banks for about a decade unfortunately but his early Culture novels and mainstream output were the stuff of my formative years. Also worth noting he was a funny and genuinely nice guy, always had time for a chat and the like with fans at book signings.

RIP.

This has hit me so hard. I'm in tears writing this. I have (very thankfully) no experience of this type of cancer but my best friend committed suicide 6 years ago. This may seem completely unrelated but after meeting in 2000 we grew close through a mutual love of the wasp factory and loved other Iain's other works. His suicide note had a quote from Iain - Sometimes I wish I had a cat. All I’ve ever had was a head, and that the seagulls took.

sometimes I despair of this world and it's injustices.

Thanks Johnny Vodka, looks to be coming soon - but there's a couple of good radio retrospectives at the moment:

iPlayer

For those that don't frequent the Bargain forum - Bank's final book i̶s̶ was Ł3.99 Hardback at Amazon:

Iain Banks: Raw Spirit- A Review Show Special BBC2 tonight 10-00pm, never read his books or seen this guy, but would be interesting to watch this, as you guys have brought him to my attention. Must get some of his books for my NOOK.
