Name and writer of a ghost story?

I read a ghost story years ago and can't for the life of me remember the title, writer or the book of ghost stories I read it in.
It's written in diary form.
The man whose diary it is begins to hear a scraping sound.
As the diary progresses, the scraping sound gets louder and more frequent until, at the end, it is at his door.

Anyone know it?

Sounds like one of HP Lovecraft's...

Could it be The Diary of Alonzo Typer? This was mostly written by Lovecraft from a very poor draft by William Lumley. (Unfortunately Lovecraft is to blame for the embarrassing final lines!)

No, that's not it.
I've checked the short stories of all of the major horror and ghost writers and nothing sounds familiar.
I even just bought a copy of 65 Great Tales Of The Supernatural (edited by Mary Danby) which is the anthology I thought I'd originally read it in all those years ago.
I have a feeling (from memory so could be very wrong!) that it was a British writer and probably written in the 19th/early 20th Century.
I've also checked lists of the stories featured in the Armada ghost anthologies but to no avail.
Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

Sounds like the sort of thing MR James would have written? He liked things scratching at doors, as I recall.

Checked a list of Bram Stoker's short stories and it isn't one of those.

At first I thought it might be M R James but I can't find it in any of his short stories.

Are you sure it's a short story, because what you describe sounds just like a part from Dracula.

Definitely not from Dracula.
It's a self contained short story and I read it in an anthology.
I'm searching through all lists of anthologies (Armada, Fontana etc...) I can find at the moment so hopefully I'll stumble upon it somewhere along the line!

It does - are you sure there just wasn't an extract from Dracula in the anthology?

It's not Le Fanu as far as I know.
I found a site listing all his short stories and it's not one of them.

Definitely not Dracula.
Not sure how to do spoiler tags or I'd post the ending of the story as I remember it which might jolt some memories.

just to one of these [ and one of these ] and the word spoiler in the middle. so it looks like this [ spoiler ] (without the spaces)

Then do one of these [/ spoiler ] to finish it. again without the spaces.

If you get no joy here might be worth posting on reddit's tipofmytongue subreddit. They're excellent at identifying stuff like this.

I've read this too. I think it could be The Hounds of Tindalos, not a Lovecraft but one by Frank Bellknap Long? Or, at least, a Lovecraft Anthology, perhaps by August Derlith, Robert Block or Ramsey Campbell? There, there's some names to hunt down.

I've definitely read this, if I recall correctly, the sound gets quieter the nearer they are? Or something like that.

I reckon we're on the right track here.

But not quite there...

There seem to be quite a few similar stories out there.
I'm now trying to find the anthology it was in - I think it was probably published somewhere between about 1978 and 1984.
Which most likely narrows it down to at least a few hundred books!

It doesnt help, but I remember it too now you've said the end. I remember thinking it was The Hound of Tindalos and then realising it wasnt when I re-read it.

I'm glad somebody else remembers it - at least I know I'm not imagining it!

Thought I had it, but the story I'm thinking off has a bluff ending.

Good luck finding it, as you've mentioned, horror anthologies were hugely popular at the time.

Do you remember what era the story is set in, contemporary or period?
