RIP The Dandy!

Well after 75 years the Dandy is closing down with a special 75th anniversary edition on 4 December

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotlan...ntral-19284222

When I read it it cost 8p and 2 million people did likewise, currently it costs about £2.50 (or did last time I read it) and 8000 bothered to buy it.

My last copy I have to admit it was a shadow of its former self, classic artwork gone for a more modern style, stupid new characters.

Who'd have thought a Cheryl Cole spoof called Cheryl Mole wouldn't have saved it.

RIP

R

Its a shame, but I think its the £2.50 cost rather than other factors being mentioned.

They are suggesting that its not the end, probably going to do an e-version.
If they can set it at a low enough price then I can see it carry on.

It's also sitting in a sea of Kiddie Comics trying to compete, like magazines and newspapers that fill the shelves of WH Smith it's a dying industry. Part of the Charm of the Beano, Dandy, Whizzer & Chips and Topper was that they had a bygone timelessness that sadly faded as they fell from publication and got revamped. I had every annual every Christmas throughout my childhood. But now days Children's TV runs all day long on it's own channels, Kids have the internet and big budget games to draw their attention from reading anything.

Don't understand why they (or any Brit comic character other than Dennis the Menace) didn't go into animation and use the kid's TV channels as another outlet rather than have them as competitors.

I never really 'got' Dandy like I did the characters in Beano or later Eagle or 2000AD. I just couldn't relate to Desperate Dan, come to think of it the only other Dandy character I think of is Korky the Cat.

Nooooooooo!! I got the dandy and beano EVERY week when I was a nipper!!! loved it, it was overly violent in a subtle way that the comics in these times have removed

It's funny, I've never read a single Beano or Dandy comic... From about 4 years old my parents would buy me Viz as I'd read one of my older brothers and loved it (from what I've been told anyway!)

You've missed out big time there, as a vast amount of Viz jokes are subtle (and not so subtle) allusions to Dandy or Beano strips.

Not surprised, really, Dandy was dated when I was a kid.

Shame. My first proper foray into comics was The Dandy (later, I ended up getting The Beano every week as well). Ended up still getting them for a little while when I reached my early teens, just out of habit (Christ knows why -by that point, I wasn't even reading them!).

Think it was about 26p when I started and about 34p when I finished. £2.50 is a massive jump!

It cost 26p in 1991 - which equates to 47p in today's prices.

So £2.50 does seem ridiculous - but when you're only selling 8,000 copies at a time I suppose something has to be done.

I wonder who the 8,000 current buyers are?

I always had The Beano and Beezer, never really bothered with The Dandy when I was a kid.

Wonder how long The Beano will go on for.

Surprised the two haven't mearged.

Wonder how the annuals sell, I still get one each year and its still the classic comic strips for the mostpart. I imagine they sell plenty for adults and hardly any to kids

Dandy was always the poor relation to the Beano and Whizzer and Chips.

Best thing about it was the Viz pee take "Desperately unfunny Dan"!

I got the Beano, whilst my brother got the Dandy and there was a rivalry between us as to which was best.

I'm sure my 8 year old self would have been pretty pleased by this news. However the grown up me is sorry to see its demise.

I also carried on getting the Beano into my teens, but had to stop when it turned out a boy in my class was our paperboy and I was pretty embarrassed about still reading a comic.

Shame, I used to get the dandy, beano and 'buster and monster fun' (which was the two comics merged together when I was a little kid. The excitment waiting for the paperboy to deliver them was almost like waiting for a new bluray nowadays.

They seem to be heading for digital releases which could work well in the long term provided they get pricing models, distribution and marketing/awareness right.

Weekly (was it still weekly) / monthly is becoming a hard sell especially with increasing prices.
